Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX - The north team won the 2010 Dennis Johnson Memorial Girls High School All-Classic Friday afternoon at the Austin Convention Center, 60-54.
The north team jumped ahead in the first quarter behind a team effort to drive the lane. They ended the quarter on a 12-4 run, giving them a 21-10 advantage at the buzzer.
Katherine Ashton's back-to-back buckets closed the gap, and eventually lead the team to tying the game at 25. Ashley James' bucket gave the lead back to the North and started a 6-0 run. Defense was a key factor for the North team in the final four minutes of the half, as they kept the South from scoring. At intermission, the North was ahead 31-25.
Both teams hustled up and down the court in the third quarter, each making a basket in the first few minutes. Several minutes passed without a made basket, until Katie Jarrel's bucket extended the North's lead. Jarrel's shot from downtown at the buzzer created excitement from the crowd, but hit the rim and bounced out. Heading in to the fourth quarter the North held the lead, 40-37.
Westlake's Courtney Duever lead the South in the fourth quarter, scoring four of her 14 points in the quarter. After Duever tied the game at 44, the teams traded basket for basket until Maddie Wheeler's three-point shot gave the North the advantage 56-54.Wheeler then visited the free-throw line on two separate occasions in the final minute of the game, making all four free throws.
"It was a great experience for all the girls," said Stony Point's Danny Cage, head coach of the North team. "All these girls have played together over the past four years, and it was great to get them together for one more game."
"We enjoyed it. It was a great group of girls who executed well on the court," said Keith Smith (Westlake) who coached the South team.
The South had three players who scored in double figures: Westlake's Duever (14), Dripping Springs' Jisele Green (13), and LBJ's Alex Jones (12).
The MVP of the game was Stony Point's Ashley James who had 10 points for the North.
