TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma City Thunder assignee Byron Mullens finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season, as the Tulsa 66ers (27-21) defeated the Iowa Energy (36-13) 125-87 Friday night at the Tulsa Convention Center. Thunder assignee Mustafa Shakur ran the offense, as he dished out a game-high nine assists to go along with five points and four rebounds en route to the 38-point margin of victory, the highest in franchise history.
The 66ers started the game shooting well, as Mullens hit two free throws and buried a three-pointer during a 10-4 Tulsa run right after tip off. After two free throws by the Energy's Shyron Ely cut the Tulsa lead to 16-8 with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter, the 66ers rallied behind four straight three-pointers, one for Deron Washington and three by Larry Owens, which sparked a 23-7 run to finish the period. The 66ers made 14-of-22 field goals (63.6 percent) on the way to scoring a season-high 39 first quarter points. Tulsa also allowed a season-low 15 first quarter points for an opponent, as the Energy made 6-of-21 attempts (28.6 percent). Owens had 12 points, as the 66ers out rebounded the Energy 14-8 in the period.
Both teams traded baskets in the second quarter, as Tulsa built as much as a 27-point advantage during the period. The 66ers forced eight turnovers in the quarter, and shot 42.1 percent (8-19) and went into halftime with a 64-40 lead. Mullens led Tulsa with seven second quarter points. The Energy made 6-of-17 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws, as Connor Atchley and Marvin Phillips each scored seven points in the quarter.
The 66ers forced four Energy turnovers in the first five minutes of the third quarter, and blasted out to a 74-40 lead with 6:47 remaining in the period following a 10-0 run. The Energy scored the next nine points in the quarter, but both teams struggled from the field as the 66ers outscored Iowa 21-16 in the period. The 66ers led 85-56 going into the final quarter, after shooting 3-for-12 from the field, but connecting on 14-of-18 free throws. The Energy shot 30 percent (6-20) from the field in the quarter.
Latavious Williams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, as the 66ers shot 14-of-22 (63.6 percent) and outscored the Energy 40-31 in the period, their second straight game with 40-plus points in the final quarter. Mark Tyndale scored 13 for Iowa, as they shot 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from the field in the period.
The 66ers out rebounded the Energy 54-36 for the game, and their bench outscored Iowa 61-36.
Led by Mullens, the 66ers finished with six players scoring in double figures, including two double-doubles. Williams finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, while Moses Ehambe and Owens each added 15 points. Deron Washington had 14 points and six rebounds, while Marcus Lewis contributed 13 points and six boards off the bench.
Led by Tyndale with 21 points, the Energy had five players in double digit scoring. Atchley finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Jeff Trepagnier, Pat Carroll and Phillips each added 11 points.
Both teams match up again tomorrow night for the second game of the back-to-back-to-back set for the 66ers. Saturday's contest is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. CST. Tulsa then travels to Nevada for the regular season finale to face the Reno Bighorns on Sunday, April 4 at 6 p.m. CST, a game that was postponed earlier this week due to weather conditions that made travel unsafe and can be seen live online at tulsa66ers.com.
