Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals concluded the first of three contests against the Florida Everblades with a 4-2 victory Wednesday night at Scope Arena.
For the third consecutive game, the Admirals jumped out to an early two-goal lead. For the second consecutive game, they did so before the conclusion of the first period.
Norfolk forward, Scott Allen, got things started with his 13th goal of the season at 4:16 of the first period. After a battle in the corner, the puck deflected out and found Allen waiting at the top of the right hash marks. He flicked a wrister past Floride netminder, Daniel Altshuller, to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team.
Just over five minutes later, Greg Chase quickly found some open ice. He collected the puck and carried it around the right ring before unloading it from the slot, putting the Admirals on top, 2-0, at 9:25.
At 17:32, as Norfolk's Alexis Loiseau s:at for high sticking, Florida forward, Kevin Montgomery, capitalized on the man advantage. His power-play goal cut the Admirals lead in half, 2-1, and the score remain unchanged through the rest of the first period.
Also for the third consecutive game, Norfolk saw a two-goal lead vanish. But tonight, the Admirals would not let that faze them. The Everblades logged the equalizer at 16:30 in the second after Brendan O'Donnell took a pass from Maxime St.-Cyr. O'Donnell sliced through the Norfolk zone and threw one in from the top of the left circle, knotting the score, 2-2.
Less than three minutes later, the Admirals answered back and retook the lead. With just 51 seconds left in the second period, Braden Christoffer, standing in front of the net, tipped in Cole Martin's slapper from the left circle at 19:09, regaining the lead. The middle frame would end with the Admirals on top, 3-2.
Norfolk's third period power-play goal provided them some added insurance. At 11:29 of the third, Allen took a shot that bounced through Altshuller's legs, and Norfolk forward, Steven Whitney, muscled the puck across the goal line for his 14th goal of the season. The Admirals would hold onto the 4-2 lead throughout the rest of regulation to upend the Conference-leading Florida Everblades.
Admirals netminder, Nic Riopel, got in front of 29 of Florida's 31 shots, and Altshuller blocked 23 of 27 Norfolk attempts. Both teams went one-for-two on the power play.
The Admirals host the Everblades again Friday night at Scope Arena for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
