Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (24-18) held the Intimidators to just six hits and one run in a 7-1 game one win at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday night. Luis Noel, who lost his first three starts in May, earned the win in seven strong innings. The Shorebirds gained a game in the standings on Kannapolis (second place) and Hagerstown (first place), who lost to Greensboro tonight.
The Shorebirds were first to crack the scoreboard in the first inning. Mikey Planeta lashed a double through the left-center field gap to open the game. Then, Ty Kelly reached on an error by third baseman Juan Silverio. Kipp Schutz followed with an RBI double inside the third base bag and down the left field line to give the Shorebirds a 1-0. Mike Flacco followed with a grounder to the right side to plate Schutz.
The Shorebirds added three more runs in the third. Jonathan Schoop was hit by a pitch with one out. Then, Schutz hit his second double of the night to put runners at second and third. Flacco followed with a two-run single up the middle to increase the lead to 4-0. Michael Ohlman then doubled over the head of Kenny Gilbert in right field to score Flacco.
Kannapolis plated their lone run in the sixth inning. Kyle Eveland hit a one out single. He then stole second and the throw from Ohlman deflected off the glove of Jonathan Schoop and into right-center, allowing Eveland to score.
In the eighth, the Shorebirds put the game out of reach with two more runs. Schutz drew a walk. Then, Flacco blasted a triple to the wall in left-center to score Schutz from first. Two batters later, Adam Gaylord doubled down the right field line to score Flacco.
Luis Noel earned the win in seven stellar innings. He allowed just five hits. Ashur Tolliver entered in the eighth inning and struck out six batters over the final two innings.
Kannapolis starter Paul Burnside, who lasted only three innings, was pinned with the loss.
Flacco and Schutz paced the Shorebirds offense with three hits apiece.
The Shorebirds and Intimidators will play game two of the series on Saturday, May 21 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. LHP Jarret Martin will make his first start of the 2011 season.
