Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads fell in a back-and-forth battle against the Rome Braves, 6-5, before 2,492 fans at State Mutual Stadium in Rome on Friday night.
The Crawdads (22-19) got out to a quick start against RHP David Filak (W, 2-3), striking for a run in the top of the first. SS Jurickson Profar led off with a double off the right field wall, followed immediately by an RBI double by 2B Odubel Herrera to move Hickory in front, 1-0.
After Crawdads RHP Luke Jackson, making his professional debut, retired the first five that he faced, the Braves (15-27) put together a two-out rally to tie the game in the second. C Christian Bethancourt kept the inning going with a two-out single and then moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. DH Chris Garcia brought Bethancourt in with an RBI single to get the Braves on the board, 1-1.
Hickory came right back, striking for a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to open a multi-run lead. RF Josh Richmond drove in DH Andrew Clark with a two-out RBI double in the fourth, before a bases-loaded rally in the fifth. With the bases full and no outs, LF Jonathan Roof brought in CF Jake Skole with a sacrifice fly, leaving runners at the corners for Profar. Profar promptly lined an RBI single to right field, putting the Crawdads in front, 4-1.
Rome responded right away, driving in four runs in the bottom of the fifth against Jackson and RHP Colby Killian (L, 2-1). RF David Rohm dealt the first big blow of the inning with a two-run homer, before Rome received a go-ahead two-run single from SS Elmer Reyes later in the inning to go up, 5-4.
The Braves added another run to the lead in the bottom of the sixth. 1B Jake Dalfonso started the stanza with a double and came in one out later on an RBI double by Garcia, stretching the lead to 6-4.
The Crawdads attempted a top of the ninth inning comeback against RHP Tyler Hess (S, 3), with Profar driving in his second RBI on his fourth hit of the night, but Hess and the Braves got out of it for a 6-5 win to start the series.
