Delmarva doubles past Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators surrendered seven doubles, three of them to Kipp Schutz, en route to a 7-1 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday night.

Schutz and teammate Mike Flacco combined to go 6-for-9 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored, and Flacco finished a homerun shy of the cycle.

Delmarva jumped out to an early 5-0 lead against Intimidators starter Paul Burnside. Mikey Planeta doubled to lead off the first inning, and Ty Kelly reached on an error. Schutz doubled home Planeta, and Kelly scored on a Mike Flacco groundout.

In the third inning, Flacco added a two-run single, and Michael Ohlman drove him in with a double of his own for a 5-0 lead. Burnside (3-2) finished the game allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits with a strikeout in a losing effort.

Phil Negus tossed three scoreless inning of relief for Kannapolis, allowing 2 hits with 2 strikeouts. Luis Noel tossed seven strong innings for Delmarva, allowing an unearned run on 5 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Noel (3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak with tonight's win.

Delmarva tacked on two runs off Kevin Moran in the eighth inning.

The Intimidators and Shorebirds continue the four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Matt Heidenreich (3-1, 4.89) takes the mound for Kannapolis against Delmarva's Jarret Martin (2-1, 3.09).
