Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

CHARLESTON, WV - It took until Game 41 on the year, but the Lakewood BlueClaws have their first 3 game winning streak of 2011 as they won game 1 of their 4 game series against the West Virginia Power 3-2 on Friday night in Charleston, WV. The BlueClaws as a team only managed 4 hits in the ballgame, but they made them count as 3 of the 4 runners who reached base via base hit came around to score. The Power threatened to tie it in the 9th inning as they got the tying run to 2nd base, but Juan Sosa was able to get out of the jam and pick up his 4th save of the year for Lakewood.

It wasn't a game for those who like a lot of offense as the BlueClaws combined for 4 hits, and West Virginia managed just 5 as a team. Ervis Manzanillo got the start for Lakewood, and he pitched very well picking up the win to even up his record at 2-2 on the year. Manzanillo went 6 1/3rd innings, allowed just 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 while giving up 1 unearned run in the 1st inning. Colby Shreve pitched 1 2/3rd perfect innings in relief, and the Juan Sosa got credit for the save after allowing 2 singles, a walk, and balking in a run in the bottom of the 9th.

Offensively for Lakewood, Miguel Alvarez continued his hot hitting with a signle to lead off the 3rd inning. Then he stole 2B and took 3B on a throwing error by the catcher Elias Diaz. Edgar Duran hit a sacrifice fly to RF to score Alvarez and tie the game at 1-1. Duran was 0-3 in the game as his 9 game hitting streak came to an end. The big damage was done in the 6th inning with 2 outs as the BlueClaws hit back-to-back HR's for the 1st time since August 10th last year against West Virginia. Zach Collier hit his 1st HR of the year off the SP for the Power LHP Colton Cain, the Geancarlo Mendez hit the very enxt pitch out for his 2nd HR of the year and put Lakewood up 3-1.

Lakewood is now 19-22 on the year with their win Friday night. Saturday the BlueClaws will try to make it 4 wins in a row and get to 20 wins. Opening Day starter Mario Hollands (2-3, 4.43 ERA) will try to extend the streak for Lakewood, and he will be opposed by RHP Zack Von Rosenberg (0-3, 7.91 ERA). First Pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
