Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power lost 3-2 to the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Zach Collier and Geancarlo Mendez hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to provide the winning run support for Lakewood.
West Virginia tallied the game's first run in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Dan Grovatt reached on an error by Collier and advanced to second base. Matt Curry followed with single to drive in Grovatt and stake Power starter Colton Cain to an early edge.
Cain retired the side in order in each of the first two innings before allowing a run in the third. Miguel Alvarez led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Power catcher Elias Diaz. Alvarez scored on a sacrifice fly by Edgar Duran to even the score.
With two outs in the sixth, Cain surrendered a solo home run to right by Collier on a 2-1 pitch. The next batter, Mendez, hit the very next pitch off the scoreboard in left to extend the lead to 3-1 and knock the West Virginia starting pitcher out of the game.
The Power put the tying run on base twice over the final three innings, but managed only one more run in the bottom of the ninth. After base hits by Grovatt and Curry, Juan Sosa balked in the second and final Power run.
Cain (2-4) took the loss, while Ervis Manzanillo (2-2) garnered the win and Sosa picked up his fourth save. The Power out hit the BlueClaws 5-4, but four of those base hits were singles and half of Lakewood's hits were home runs. Curry had the only multi-hit game of the night from either side.
The Power and BlueClaws will continue this four game series on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. West Virginia will toss Zack Von Rosenberg against Lakewood's Mario Hollands. The Power will wear charity jerseys during the game to be auctioned off to benefit suicide prevention.
