January 15, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
LOVELAND, CO - The Missouri Mavericks claimed their 30th win of the season on Friday night in Loveland, CO with a 5-4 nail-biter victory over the Colorado Eagles. The Mavericks improve to 30-3-1-1 with 62 points atop the ECHL standings.
The Mavs sprinted out to an early lead over the Eagles at the Budweiser Events Center, dominating with a 4-1 lead midway through the second frame, before Colorado came flying back into the game with 3 unanswered goals to tie things up 4-4 in the third period. Then Josh Holmstrom, a native to the Colorado Spring area, notched his third goal of the night to complete a hat trick in front of his friends and family to secure the Mavericks 30th win of their 2015-16 campaign.
Net-minder Josh Robinson collected his 15th consecutive win between the pipes for the Mavericks on Friday night, turning away 30 of the Eagles' 34 shots on goal through a full 60 minutes. Robinson, who is currently ranked third in the ECHL amongst top goaltenders with a 1.73 goals-against average (GAA) and a .933 save percentage (SV%), is just 1 win away from tying the league record for a single-season goaltender win streak. (Record held by Jeff Jakaitis, South Carolina, 2014-15, 16 wins). Robinson owns an overall record of 19-0-0-1 this season with the Mavericks.
The Mavericks kicked-off their first game against the Colorado Eagles since joining the ECHL just 16 seconds into play when Josh Holmstrom scored with the help of teammates Jesse Root and Tyler Barnes. Defenseman Jake Marto answered back for the Eagles to tie the game up 1-1 at 12:22, assisted by Johnny Lazo and former Mavs forward, Ludwig Karlsson. Then at 18:30, Holmstrom boosted the visiting Mavs up 2-1 with a lone helped from David deKastrozza.
Missouri started the second frame off just as they did the first, with another early goal, this time served up by Andrew Courtney. Courtney lit the lamp for the twelfth time this season with a tap-in goal off a rebound to make it 3-1 Mavericks at 1:14. Teammates Sebastien Sylvestre and Reed Seckel assisted on the play.
Eric Levine's night in-goal for the Eagles ended when Tyler Barnes scored the Mavs fourth point of the contest. Defenseman Trevor Ludwig and net-minder Josh Robinson were credited with the assists on Barnes' tally at 11:18 of the second period.
Colorado gained new life just seconds later at 11:37 when Jesse Mychan cut the Mavs dominant lead in half 4-2 with the help of Trent Daavettila and Kyle Kraemer. Then the Eagles took a tighter grip on the game at 15:32 when Daavettila scored a goal of his own, unassisted, to pull the home team within 1 goal of Missouri.
The Eagles put everything they had into the final frame, outshooting the Mavericks 16-5 through the last 20 minutes of play. Darryl Bootland (assisted by Everett Sheen and Sean Zimmerman) tied the game up 4-4 at 8:32 fresh out of the penalty box in a one-on-one situation with Robinson.
Holmstrom completed his hat trick with his third goal of the night just 58 seconds later to give the Mavericks a 5-4 edge over the Eagles, which they would hold until the final horn. Barnes and Chris Owens assisted on the final scoring play of the night at 9:30.
The Missouri Mavericks will face-off against the Colorado Eagles again tomorrow night in an 8:05p.m. (CST) contest at the Budweiser Events Center.
