Walleye Bust Through the IceMen 5-1
January 15, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release
(Toledo, OH) Shane Berschbach and Evan Rankin each scored twice in a 5-1 win over Evansville in front of a standing room only crowd of 7,625 at the Huntington Center Friday night. Toledo has an overall record of 21-10-1-3 and 8-4-0-1 at home.
The IceMen took the lead with a goal at 11:53 of the first period. Dominic Zombo (5th) fired a wrist shot at 16:40 of the period to even the game at one after a calm opening frame. Toledo scooped up a power play goal from Shane Berschbach (11th) to put Toledo in front for good just 2:35 into the second period.
Evan Rankin took over after that as he scored twice with the first coming on the backhand at 7:14. His second came at 10:40 of the period when he stuffed in a shot at the side of the net on goaltender Christoffer Bengtsberg for his third goal of the season. Evansville made a goaltender change after that goal.
New Evansville net minder Cody Reichard was beaten by the reigning ECHL Player of the Week Shane Berschbach on a wraparound goal at 2:29 of the third period for the fifth Walleye goal. Things finished very physical as the two teams combined for 36 penalty minutes in the final minute of play that saw four fighting majors.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 20 of 21 shots and has a record of 16-4-0-2 on the season. Dustin Carlson came on with 9:38 left in the third period and turned aside all four shots he faced. Toledo's power play has scored at least one goal in 11 of the last 16 games and is at 28.8% (15-52) over that span. Berschbach finished with 4 points (2G, 2A).
Walleye Transaction: Defenseman Scott Czarnowczan was reassigned to Toledo from Grand Rapids prior to the game today. Czarnowczan appeared in two games with Grand Rapids and did not have a point. The second year defenseman has 8 points (2G, 6A) in 21 games this year with Toledo.
