Colorado Eagles News Release
Loveland, Co.- The Colorado Eagles fell to the Missouri Mavericks 5-4 Friday night at the Budweiser Events Center. Mavericks forward Josh Holmstrom led his team to the win with a hat trick on the night, including the game-winning goal in the third period.
The Mavericks got off to a quick start when Holmstrom scored just 16 seconds into the first period off a 2-on-1 rush down the ice, giving Missouri the 1-0 advantage.
With 7:38 to play in the period, Colorado tied it up at 1-1 when defenseman Jake Marto took a drop pass in the slot and fired the puck past goaltender Josh Robinson.
Missouri retook the lead late in the first period when Holmstrom scored his second goal of the game, burying a rebound between the circles at the 18:30 mark of the period, making it 2-1 Mavericks.
Early in the second period, forward Andrew Courtney jammed home a loose rebound in front of the net to give Missouri a 3-1 lead at the 1:14 mark of the second. The Mavericks bolstered their lead when forward Tyler Barnes found an opening and scored on a breakaway with 8:42 to play in the second making it 4-1 Missouri.
After Barnes' goal Clarke Saunders took over in net for Eric Levine, with Levine finishing the evening with six saves on 10 shots.
The Eagles scored back-to-back goals late in the middle period, as forward Jesse Mychan struck first scoring from the circle at the 11:37 mark. Fellow forward Trent Daavettila then forced a turnover at the blue line and wrapped in front of the net to cut the lead to one with an unassisted goal at the 15:32 mark.
Moving into the third period forward Darryl Bootland, fresh out of the penalty box scored a breakaway goal to tie the game at 4-4 at the 8:32 mark of the third period.
Just 58 seconds later, Holmstrom scored his third goal of the game to put the Mavericks back on top 5-4 with 10:30 to play in the game.
The Eagles pulled Saunders in favor of an extra skater with just over two minutes remaining, but the Mavericks held on to win 5-4.
The same two teams will meet again Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
