Eric Niesen teamed up with Scott Shaw and Manuel Alvarez to fire a five-hit shutout, leading Binghamton to a 1-0 victory over Richmond in front of 9,399 at The Diamond Thursday night. Niesen allowed just four hits over 5 1/3 innings and tied a season-high with five strikeouts to pick up his second win.

Binghamton (32-34) plated the game's only run in the first inning. Luis Hernandez led off with an opposite-field single off Richmond (31-35) starter Felix Romero. With Hernandez on the move, Sean Ratliff lined a double into the right-field corner allowing Hernandez to motor around from first and score.

Niesen took it from there. The lefty, who walked four, induced three double plays from the Flying Squirrels hitters to bail him out of trouble on numerous occasions. Niesen departed to the win in the sixth after permitting a one-out single to Roger Kieschnick.

Shaw took over, stranded Kieschnick in the sixth and then proceeded to toss a scoreless seventh. The right-hander has yet to allow an earned run since moving to the bullpen. In five appearances, Shaw has permitted an unearned run on 10 hits over 11 innings.

Romero, who was making a spot-start was almost as good as Niesen. The Dominican right-hander pitched well enough to win, tossing a career-high six innings. He allowed a run on six hits to take the loss.

Alvarez was summoned in the eighth to put the game on ice and proceeded to retire all six hitters he faced to earn his first Double-A save. He struck out two in his best outing to date with the B-Mets.

Hernandez ripped three hits out of the leadoff spot to run his hitting streak to eight games. Josh Satin enjoyed his second consecutive multi-hit effort with a pair of singles in his first two at-bats.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for Binghamton and it secured the series win over the Flying Squirrels two-games-to-one.

With the road in the rearview mirror, the B-Mets open up a three-game series at NYSEG Stadium with the Trenton Thunder Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Chris Schwinden (1-4, 7.01) goes for Binghamton and RHP Hector Noesi (3-0, 2.57) counters for Trenton. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
