Altoona Curve News Release
TRENTON, NJ - Curve righty Bryan Morris allowed a total of eight runs and surrendered a career-high 10 hits over five innings as the Altoona Curve fell in the rubber match of a three-game series to the Trenton Thunder (AA - New York Yankees) by the score of 8-4 on Thursday night at Waterfront Park.
Altoona (42-24) actually took a 1-0 edge on a solo home run off the bat of Gorkys Hernandez, but the Thunder (40-24) would score eight unanswered runs.
Trenton used big hits in the second - an RBI single by Luis Nunez and also in the fourth - an RBI double by Austin Krum to build their leads.
The Thunder would bust the game open in the fifth inning with two outs. A pair of singles set up Nunez, who belted a three-run homer to pad the Trenton lead to seven runs. Nunez finished the night 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
After the Altoona Curve finally got to Thunder starter Lance Pendleton - who retired 12 straight from the first through fifth innings - Josh Harrison smashed his first Double-A home run to cut the deficit in half at 8-4.
Despite three scoreless innings from the Curve bullpen to hold Trenton at bay- two innings from Tony Watson and one from Daniel Moskos - the Altoona offense was unable to climb any closer.
The loss means that the Altoona Curve will have to wait another year to try to win a series at Waterfront Park. The last series victory the Curve were able to secure against the Thunder was during the 2006 season.
The Altoona Curve turn the page and continue their road trip on Friday with the first of a three-game series at The Diamond against the Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA - San Francisco). The two pitchers with the most wins in the Eastern League will duel against each other. Altoona righty Jared Hughes (8-3, 4.08) will take the mount against Richmond RHP Daryl Maday (8-2, 2.02) at 7:05 p.m. Air time on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:35 p.m.
