New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Rock Cats roared back in the bottom of the eighth to score four runs and Chris Province came out of the bullpen to fire three perfect innings in relief to down Harrisburg, 6-3 on Thursday night. The `Cats avoided a series sweep with the win.
Down 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Roberts led off the inning by striking out but reached first safely when catcher Sean Rooney misfired a throw to first after a dropped third strike. Erik Lis knocked in Roberts with a double to tie the game. Steve Singleton's RBI sacrifice fly with the bases loaded put the Rock Cats ahead, 4-3. Chris Parmelee scored from third on a wild pitch and Danny Lehmann added an RBI single to round out the inning.
The Rock Cats had to claw their way back after giving up an early run. Starter David Bromberg dug himself a hole in the first inning when he walked Danny Espinosa and hit the next batter, Jesus Valdez, to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Chris Marrero loaded up the bases for the Senators with a base hit to left. Espinosa then scored on a Marvin Lowrance groundout for a 1-0 lead.
The Senators tacked on two more runs in the second when Bromberg walked Edgardo Baez to open the inning and Tim Pahuta followed with a two-run blast to right field.
Aaron Thompson held the Rock Cats scoreless into the fifth. Steve Singleton lined a one-out single into right and Danny Lehmann reached on a walk. Joe Benson followed with a double to center that knocked in Singleton to close the gap, 3-1. Chris Cates added an RBI groundout to bring the `Cats within one run.
Bromberg pitched a solid game, limiting the Senators to four hits and three runs in six innings, but came away with the no-decision. Province (2-1) picked up the win in relief as he struck out five.
Harrisburg reliever Cole Kimball suffered the loss.
