Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels squandered six solid innings from Felix Romero and were shut out, 1-0, by the Binghamton Mets in front of 9,399 on Thursday night at The Diamond.

Luis Hernandez led off the ballgame ominously for Romero as he singled into center field. With Hernandez running, Sean Ratliff followed with a double to the right-field corner. Hernandez came all the way around for a 1-0 B-Mets' lead.

Pitching dominated the ballgame, and left-hander Eric Niesen (2-3) set the tone. Binghamton's starter worked 5 1/3 innings to earn his second victory of the season. He shut down the Squirrels on four hits, working around three walks and striking out five.

Romero (0-1) recovered to turn in his finest outing of the season. He worked a career-long six innings, allowing just the lone run on six hits. He walked just one and struck out, extending his previous career-long outing by two innings.

Right-hander Scott Shaw followed Niesen and worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief through the seventh inning. Righty Manuel Alvarez was tasked with the final six outs, and he recorded them in succession to close out the ballgame. He earned his first save of the season in the process.

The Squirrels got a combined three innings of scoreless relief from Tony Pena Jr. and Rafael Cova in the loss. Richmond was shut out for the fourth time on the year.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at The Diamond. RHP Felix Romero (0-0, 5.40) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Eric Niesen (1-3, 3.49) for Binghamton.
