Brampton Steelheads News Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON -- For the second time in six days, the Mississauga Steelheads would play host to the Niagara IceDogs. After announcing a trade with the Owen Sound Attack on Wednesday, the IceDogs' newest member, goaltender Brandon Hope made his season debut in front of an energetic crowd at the Hershey Centre, including members of the Applewood Hockey Association.

The Steelheads tested Hope early and often, welcoming him to the Mississauga-Niagara rivalry. The Trout jumped out to an early lead in shots, but the visiting team would open the scoring. Just over four minutes into this one, Spencer Martin made a pad stop on Billy Jenkins with a lateral move, however could not control the loose puck and Jenkins succeeded on the second attempt. Seven minutes into the frame, the league-best home penalty kill was put to the test and the Steelheads four-man unit was successful in eliminating the chance. Hope looked shaky throughout the first period, as he adjusted to his new team. The Trout had several chances, but time after time, his defence bailed him out and preserved the lead. Late in the period, Niagara extended their lead to two goals as Mikkel Aagard tapped in a rebound. Despite trailing, Mississauga ended the frame ahead 17-11 in shots.

The Trout took an early penalty in the second period and were again forced to contend with the IceDogs power play. After killing off the chance, the Steelheads looked to tilt the momentum in their favour. Nathan Bastian and Marcus Dickerson had a nice give-and-go passing play, but Dickerson couldn't get his stick on the centering pass. Shortly after, Everett Clark stick-handled around a defenceman to gain the zone and fired a shot that was tipped just wide. Mississauga continued to pour on the offense and were rewarded with a power play opportunity. Lucas Venuto rang one off the post above Hope's glove, but that's as close as the Trout would get on the man advantage. Despite the pressure, the Steelheads could not solve Hope through two periods, despite outshooting Niagara 24-19.

The Steelheads would get their best scoring opportunity of the game with a two-man advantage for two minutes. In the early goings of the power play, Brandon Devlin had his slap shot on full display; however, the Trout were unable to convert on the opportunity. The IceDogs would seal the game with just over five minute to play as Graham Knott notched a power play marker to give the IceDogs their first win of the season series.

The Steelheads head south of the border to Erie for a Remembrance Day match up, before returning home to the Hershey Centre on Friday, November 14th. Great tickets are still available for the Mayor Hazel McCallion tribute night online through Ticketmaster and at the Hershey Centre box office.
