Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - After falling for the first time in regulation Thursday night, the Otters bounced back at home, defeating the Sarnia Sting 5-2 Friday night. Alex DeBrincat scored his first OHL hat trick, lifting the Otters to remain undefeated at home.

Gritty hockey and close calls started off the night. Nikita Korostelev put a heavy shot on the net that ended up trickling behind Devin Williams and just wide of the net. After a broken puck at the Sarnia blue line, Shaun Bily was called for holding. But before the Sting could get much of a power play started, Anthony DeAngelo joined the box for slashing, making it 4-on-4.

Just as the penalty boxes emptied, Connor McDavid took advantage of a turn over, drove into the offensive zone with Betz, and Betz rocketed the puck past Taylor Dupuis for a 1-0 Otters lead. It didn't stay that way for long. Just over a minute later, a flurry in front of the net gave DeBrincat a chance at the puck and the goal, giving the Otters a 2-0 lead. Barely two minutes later, Kurtis MacDermid turned the puck over and Sarnia put the puck behind Williams, cutting the lead in half before the Otters went on the power play to finish the period.

DeAngelo gave the Otters a second man advantage early in the second period that Darren Raddysh quickly took advantage of, putting Erie back up by two goals. The Otters killed a penalty to Raddysh before Connor Schlichting was called for interfering with Travis Wood.

Barely 30 seconds into the penalty, DeAngelo was called for his third of the night, joining Schlichting in the box. DeBrincat took a shot in front of the net 13 seconds into the 5-on-3 and the puck hit Dupuis's stick, finding the back of the net and a 4-1 lead. With just over a minute left, Joshua Chapman drilled Patrick Murphy into the boards and was quickly called for checking to the head, giving the Otters another power play to take into the locker room.

Much like the beginning of the second, the Sting were called for a penalty shortly after killing the remainder of the last one. Schlichting took another interference penalty just under two minutes into the period. Nearly a minute and a half into the power play, DeBrincat found the back of the net and completed his first OHL hat trick with assists from McDavid and Raddysh. David Brown scored just over a minute later to bring the score to 5-2, but it wasn't enough to boost the Sting over the Otters.

Erie remains undefeated at home after their first regulation loss in Niagara Thursday night. The game pushes DeBrincat to a 14-game scoring streak, while both Betz and Raddysh are both on eight-game scoring streaks. DeBrincat's hat trick is the first on home ice for the Otters since Connor Brown's three-goal game Jan. 17, 2014 against Kingston.

The Otters finish out their three-in-three weekend against Saginaw Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Erie Insurance Arena.
