Nevin's 'Hat Trick' Propels Goats on Whalers' Alumni Weekend

HARTFORD- On Whalers Alumni Weekend, Tyler Nevin offered baseball's version of a hat trick with a big three-run homer, highlighting an 11-9 comeback win for the Hartford Yard Goats over New Hampshire, before a capacity crowd of 6,850 Saturday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park. It was the 26th sellout of the season in 42 dates for Hartford, which has drawn 253,313 this season. It's the quickest the franchise has cracked the 250,000 mark in attendance.
Nevin finished the night with a homer, single and five RBI, helping the Yard Goats snap a three-game losing streak. Hartford survived a furious ninth inning Fisher Cats comeback, as they scored five runs with two outs. New Hampshire (9-14) finished with 17 hits.
Trailing 4-0 in the fifth inning. Hartford (10-12) sent eight men to the plate, scoring three runs. The big blow was a two-out, two-run single to right by Nevin off of reliever Willie Ortiz. The Yard Goats scored their first run in the inning on a bases loaded walk to Vance Vizcaino by New Hampshire starter Patrick Murphy.
The Yard Goats batted around in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on RBI-singles by Scott Burcham and Vizcaino, a Carlos Herrera sacrifice fly and Nevin's blast into the left-field seats. Vizcaino's two-run homer in the eighth inning turned out to be the difference in the game.
Rayan Gonzalez improved to 3-1, pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Mitch Horacek hurled two scoreless innings. Hartford starter Matt Dennis pitched five innings and permitted four runs on eight hits. He struck out three. Murphy, the New Hampshire starter, hurled 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on three hits. Ortiz suffered the defeat, giving up six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Nevin's homer, single and five RBI paced Hartford's 11-hit attack, while Vizcaino added a single, home run and had four RBI. Alberto Mineo went 4-for-5 with two RBI for New Hampshire, while former Yard Goat Forrest Wall had a home run and triple and Chad Spanberger added a home run, double and had three RBI.
The Yard Goats go for a split of the four-game series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410 AM, on 100.9 FM, in Spanish on 1120 AM and on the Internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com and on MiLB.com. Sunday will also conclude the Whalers Alumni Weekend, presented by UConn Health. Several former Whalers players will be in attendance and a mini hockey stick giveaway will highlight the proceedings. The Richmond Flying Squirrels then come to town to open a three-game series, Monday at 7:05 p.m.
