Wheeling Nailers News Release
A Chance to Rebound at Home
The Wheeling Nailers suffered back-to-back losses for just the second time this season last weekend, when they fell 6-3 to the Brampton Beast at home on Saturday, before a 3-2 setback in Reading against the Royals on Sunday. Saturday's home loss was Wheeling's first in regulation since November 6th, as the Nailers earned at least one point in five straight home games, posting a 4-0-1 record. Adam Krause had a goal in both games over the weekend, including the opening tally on Sunday afternoon. However, a three-goal rally by Reading in the second period turned that tilt around in a sour direction. Wheeling peppered the goal in the third period with 21 shots, but Brett Stern's marker was all the Nailers could manage on the scoreboard, as Franky Palazzese was saddled with the defeat, despite a 36-save effort.
Strange Place to End the Streak
The South Carolina Stingrays were have been cooking up a lot of success as of late, going 7-2-1 in their last ten games. Prior to Wednesday night, South Carolina had won four consecutive contests, shutting out the Atlanta Gladiators 3-0, before sweeping three games from the Orlando Solar Bears at Amway Center. As luck would have it, the Stingrays saw their four-game winning streak come to an end against the Norfolk Admirals, who erased a 1-0 deficit with three goals in a span of 2:13 in the third period for a 3-1 triumph at Norfolk Scope Arena. Defenseman Nick Jones had the lone tally for the visitors, while Vitek Vanecek suffered the loss with 15 saves.
Offense or Defense
The games on Friday and Saturday night will feature two clubs who have statistics that have been drastically different through the first quarter or so of the 2015-16 regular season. The Nailers have made a frequent habit of finding the back of the net, having done so 60 times in the first 19 games of the campaign for an average of 3.16 goals per tilt. Meanwhile, the Stingrays have only turned on the red light 48 times - the lowest total in the Eastern Conference. However, South Carolina's bread and butter is its defense and goaltending, as the 43 goals against are the third fewest in the ECHL, behind only Missouri (34) and Cincinnati (40). Wheeling has surrendered 57 tallies, for an average of 3.00 per game.
We Know Some of These Guys
Last season's version of the Stingrays came within one game of hoisting the Kelly Cup, before a 6-1 loss to the Allen Americans sent the league's championship trophy to the Lone Star State for the summer of 2015. South Carolina's current roster has seven returning players from that club, including Joe Devin, whose goal in triple overtime of game seven against Toledo sent the Stingrays to the Kelly Cup Final. That leaves plenty of spots available for new faces to the Lowcountry, including three players who have donned Wheeling uniforms in their careers. Defensemen Bobby Shea and Nick D'Agostino were both members of the 2014-15 Nailers, while 2013-14 Wheeling forward Colin Mulvey returns to the ECHL, after racking up 52 points in 40 games in Germany a year ago.
They Usually Come in the Playoffs
Friday night marks the first of two head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Stingrays this season, with both battles scheduled to take place at WesBanco Arena. Although Wheeling and South Carolina are two of the oldest teams in the ECHL (24 and 23 years respectively), this will only be the 22nd all-time meeting during regular season play, and the ninth of those clashes in the Ohio Valley. In fact, four of the last six games played between the two sides in Wheeling have been playoff contests, as the Nailers eliminated the Stingrays in both 2011 and 2014. South Carolina won two of three games in the 2014-15 season series at North Charleston Coliseum, while Wheeling's last home game was a 5-0 victory on January 13, 2013. Peter Delmas made 20 saves for the shutout, defeating 2012-13 ECHL MVP Ryan Zapolski.
