Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced a trade. Wheeling has sent defenseman Mike Gunn to the Allen Americans, in exchange for future considerations.

Gunn, 23, is currently playing in his first full season as a professional, having appeared in ten of Wheeling's first 19 games in 2015-16. The Nailers originally signed Mike a few days before the start of the regular season, after he had attended training camp with the Toledo Walleye. During his time in the Ohio Valley, the blueliner recorded one goal, one assist, two points, and ten penalty minutes, while leading the team with a +10 rating. The goal, which was his first as a pro, came on November 13th in a 6-1 win over the Reading Royals at WesBanco Arena.

Prior to a two-game stint with the SPHL's Peoria Rivermen at the end of the 2014-15 season, Gunn attended Northeastern University for three years, playing college hockey for the Huskies. There, he amassed ten assists and 46 penalty minutes in 55 games. The Livonia, Michigan native's amateur career also spanned to the USHL, where he suited up with the Chicago Steel and Youngstown Phantoms.

Mike will join three other former Nailers with the Americans, in forwards Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Ian Schultz, as well as defenseman David Makowski. Allen begins a four-game homestand on Friday, as it will play host to Rapid City, Utah, and Idaho (2).

The Nailers will play three home games over the weekend. On Friday night, The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas present Flat Screen Friday, as Wheeling hosts South Carolina at 7:35 on a Frosty Friday. On Saturday, Star Wars takes center stage, with Star Wars characters in attendance, t-shirts to the first 2,000 fans, and specialty jerseys worn by the players, as the Nailers challenge the Stingrays at 7:35. Saturday is also Teddy Bear Toss Night. Finally, on Sunday, McDonald's $5 kids tickets will be available, and fans will be able to skate with the team following the 4:05 contest against Elmira.
