Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, W.Va. - Tommy Goebel appeared to score the game-winning goal Sunday afternoon late in the third period. However, after review, the goal was disallowed due to a hand pass. Reading's Tyler Doig went on to score the game-winner with just 45 seconds remaining in the game.

As they did Saturday night, the Royals took the early lead when Ben Gordon scored his 17th goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. Doig and Scott Langdon recorded the assists. The Nailers had chances to tie the score in the first period, including a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity, but couldn't find the net.

The Nailers knotted the score at 1-1 at the 6:36 mark of the second period when Andrew Lord scored his 16th goal of the season on a pass from Bryan Ewing on the power play. Lord received Ewing's pass on his backhand right in front of Royals goaltender Michael Ouzas and carried it over to his forehand before flipping it into the net. Reid Cashman was credited with the second assist on Lord's goal.

Reading immediately regained its lead, however, when Vince Rocco scored his third goal of the season. Chris Stevens and Dan Rudisuela assisted on the goal. The Nailers tied it up again with just over six minutes remaining in the period when Lord redirected a Mitch Ganzak power play shot into the net. Ewing was also credited with his second assist of the game on Lord's second goal.

Ewing gave the Nailers their first lead of the day with just 35 seconds remaining in the second frame on his 42nd goal of the season. Lord and Billy Ryan assisted.

The Royals refused to go away, and Ben McLeod scored the equalizer less than two minutes into the third. Goebel put the Nailers back on top on a power play at the 6:26 mark of the third when he beat Ouzas glove side with a high backhander.

Dinos Stamoulis and Doig, however, scored unanswered goals down the stretch, sending the Nailers to their first loss of the weekend.

The Nailers remain in a second place tie in the division despite the loss. Lord finished the game with two goals and one assist while Ewing scored one goal with two helpers.

Wheeling went 3-for-5 on the power play while Reading was 0-for-4.

The Nailers have the week off before playing a 3-game weekend road series against the Elmira Jackals on March 27-29. The Friday and Saturday night games both begin at 7:35 p.m. while Sunday's game begins at 4:05 p.m. The Nailers' last regular season home games are on Wednesday, April 1 against Trenton at 7:05 p.m. and Friday, April 3 against Dayton at 7:35 p.m.
