Wheeling Nailers News Release
Trenton, NJ- The Wheeling Nailers used a shorthanded goal, an even strength goal and a power-play goal to beat the Trenton Titans 3-2 Saturday night in Trenton. The win was the Nailers first at the Sovereign Bank Arena this season and it stopped a season-high six game losing streak.
Paul Bissonnette opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally 13:37 into the first. After Ryan Moren gained the zone, Bissonnette picked up the rebound but shot it wide of the goal. As he centered the puck from the end boards it ricocheted off Gregg Naumenko's leg pad and into the net. It was Bissonnette's second shorthanded goal of the season.
Although the Nailers were outshot 19-9 in the first period, the score was 1-0 Wheeling when it came to a close. The second period remained scoreless thanks to Naumenko's save of Joe Guenther on a penalty shot 6:42 in.
Trenton tied the game at one at the 5:23 mark of the third as Scott Bertoli won the faceoff and streaked across the slot for an unassisted goal.
Joe Guenther regained the lead for the Nailers with his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. Jon Foster created a turnover inside the Titans' zone and brought the puck to the net. The original shot was saved but Guenther was there to tap in the loose puck.
Just 55 seconds later the Nailers increased their lead to two. With Wheeling on the power play, Sean Collins converted a one-timer from Jordan Cameron for his 15th of the year. Guenther was also credited with an assist recording the only multi-point game for the Nailers.
The Titans would make it interesting with a Jim Henkle goal at 16:53 of the third but Andy Franck finished off the night with 30 saves.
Wheeling finishes off their four game road trip on Sunday in Reading for a 4:35p.m. start.
The Nailers next home game is Friday, February 23rd against the Johnstown Chiefs at 7:30p.m.
Tickets are available now by calling 304-234-GOAL, by visiting the Nailers team store located at 1315 Main St. in downtown Wheeling or online at www.WheelingNailers.com.
