Slow start hurts Ice Pilots in 7-3 loss to Catters

BEAUMONT, TX - The Pensacola Ice Pilots surrendered two first period goals and dropped a 7-3 decision to the Texas Wildcatters on Saturday afternoon at Ford Arena.

The Wildcatters solidified their hold on first place in the South Division with the win and improved their record to 29-14-5-3 for 67 points, and 14-5-4-3 on home ice. The Ice Pilots fell to 15-33-1-1- for 32 points and 7-20-0-0 on the road.

It was a close game through the first 40 minutes with the Ice Pilots trailing just 4-2, but an early goal in the third period broke the game open and sent Texas on their way.

The Wildcatters led 2-0 after 20 minutes on a goal in the first minute of the game and a second one in the final two minutes.

The Ice Pilots played a determined second period and made it 2-1 when Dan Sullivan's long slap shot eluded the glove of goaltender Matt Yeats. Just past the midway mark of the second Texas took a 3-1 lead before the Blue and Gold narrowed the deficit to a goal again 20 seconds later when John Hecimovic scored on the power play from Dan Sullivan.

However, Texas got their power play going in the final three minutes of the period when they scored to make the game 4-2.

In the third period, Texas add three goals in the first 8 minutes before the Ice Pilots rounded out the scoring with five minutes remaining. John Hecimovic got his second on a great shot on the power play.

The Ice Pilots will conclude their three game series with the Wildcatters on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm at Ford Arena.
