Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers battled back from down 3-1 only to see the Reading Royals come up with a 5-4 win in overtime Sunday night at WesBanco Arena. Shawn Collymore notched the game winner at 2:05 of overtime to extend the Royals unbeaten streak to eight games. Joe Guenther added two goals for the Nailers and has now scored a point in 10 of his last 11 games.

The scoring began early with a Reading goal just 1:24 into the first period. Ned Lukacevic connected with Charlie Kronschnabel for a one-timer that was just out of the reach of Curtis Darling's pad for his tenth goal of the season.

The Nailers answered shortly after at 4:29 of the first period when Kevin Croxton found Guenther wide open next to the net for his first goal of the night. Chris Snavely, who finished with two assists on the night, began the play by feeding Croxton in the corner.

In the first minute of the second period the Reading scored twice to take a 3-1 lead. Joe Zappala scored just 11 seconds from the opening faceoff followed by Dany Roussin at 0:49.

Guenther scored again at 6:25 of the second to cut the Royals lead in half. Kelly Miller, this time, helped Croxton get Guenther the puck. He scored his tenth of the year a split-second before barreling into Terry Denike. Miller was playing in the 400th professional game of his eight-year career.

Wheeling tied the game with a Matt Byrnes goal 3:25 into the third period. Byrnes deflected a Seamus Young slap shot for his third goal in his ten games as a Nailer.

Vadim Slivchenko gave the Nailers their first lead of the game at 13:12 of the third. Matt Byrnes setup the goal becoming the fourth Nailer to register a multi-point game.

Penalties late in the game got the Nailers into trouble for the second night in a row. Jon Krall and Aaron Clarke took penalties to give Reading a 5-on-3 advantage with 2:10 remaining in regulation. The Royals pulled Denike to give their team a three-player edge. Brock Hooten tied the game up with just 57 seconds remaining in regulation from Scott Parse and Marc Cavosie.

Vladimir Dravecky setup Collymore for the overtime game winner to give Reading the extra point despite a 35 save performance by Darling.

The Nailers will be back on the ice next weekend, with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday all at WesBanco Arena. On Friday, the Nailers take on the Johnstown Chiefs before their back to back games with the Trenton Devils. Friday night there will be a college toga party and all fans wearing a toga will get into the game free. The fan wearing the most elaborate toga will win a $100 gift certificate to Buffalo Wild Wings.
