First period woes hurt Lynx again in 3-1 loss at Gwinnett

February 24, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Another slow start plagued the Augusta Lynx on Sunday, this time it was against 2nd place Gwinnett as the Gladiators used three 1st period goals to ulitimately defeat the Lynx, 3-1.

The other difference in the loss were the special teams. The Gladiators scored on their first two power plays of the game, both by leading goal-scorer Lou Dickenson to take a quick 2-0 lead from the opening face-off. The Lynx power plays were almost powerless, generating only three shots on goal during their first four power plays of the game. An even strength goal from Matt Anderson made it 3-0 towards the tail-end of the 1st period. Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert could not be faulted for any of the goals, often times making multiple saves before the Gladiators buried loose rebounds. The 2nd Glads goal ended up going off a Lynx defenseman into the net.

The Lynx responded with some much better play in the 2nd and 3rd periods. The lone Lynx goal of the night came in the 2nd period off the stick of #20 Matt Auffrey, who buried a loose rebound after a drive from #11 Matt Christie and a pass from #5 Ken Scuderi.

However, the rest of the way the Lynx couldn't muster much offense. #25 Adrian Veideman hit the post late in the 2nd period, but the 3rd period saw the Lynx shut down offensively, only getting six shots on goal. The loss is the fourth in the last five games for the Lynx, who have failed to score first in their last six contests.
