Wranglers Fall to Aces 3-2 In A Shootout

Anchorage, AK - The Las Vegas Wranglers (35-10-10, 80 points) were defeated by the Alaska Aces (28-19-5, 61 points) 3-2 in a shootout at Sullivan Arena on Sunday night. Aces forward Brett Hemingway scored the game-tying goal in the third period and the game-winning goal in the seventh round of the shootout. The Aces came from behind in the shootout to gain their seventh straight win. Ryan Donally and Peter Ferraro each scored in the Wranglers third straight shootout loss. Goalie Marek Scwartz stopped 24 of 26 Las Vegas shots in regulation to improve to 6-0-0. Schwartz gave up goals in the first two rounds of the shootout but, stuffed the final five shootout attempts to get the victory. Las Vegas goalie Kevin Lalande suffered the defeat with 33 saves in regulation. Lalande stopped four of seven Alaska attempts in the shootout. Despite the defeat, the Wranglers clinched a spot in the 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs due to Bakersfield's 6-1 loss at home and the point obtained from the shootout loss. The Wranglers will play at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Victoria.

In the first period, Las Vegas scored to only goal of the period as the Ferraro twins combined for a 1-0 Wranglers lead. Center Chris Ferraro stick-handled through traffic and set up Peter Ferraro on the back-door-feed for his 25th goal of the season at 9:32. The Aces were unable to get a shot on for the first 10:17 of play.

In the second period, Las Vegas left wing Ryan Donally skated into the Alaska zone and snapped a shot past Aces goalie Marek Schwartz at 1:32, giving the Wranglers a 2-0 lead. The Aces took advantage of a power play just five minutes later. Leading scorer Josh Soares jammed in a rebound at 6:50 of the period for his 25th goal of the season, trimming the Wranglers lead to 2-1. Brett Hemingway and Matt Shasby assisted on Alaska's first goal of the evening.

In the third period, Brett Hemingway fired in a rebound off a Josh Soares shot and the Aces tied the game 2-2. Hemingway's 13th of the season was scored at 13:18 and was also assisted by Vladimir Novak. The goal forced overtime for a third straight night in Anchorage.

After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to a shootout to decide a winner. Las Vegas scored on the first two attempts but, was unable to get the puck past Marek Schwartz in the final five attempts. After failing to score on their on their first three attempts, the Aces scored in the fourth and fifth round to extend the shootout to an extra frame. Brett Hemingway tallied the game winner to secure the Aces seventh straight victory and third straight over the Wranglers.

The Wranglers continue their longest road trip of the season and travel to Victoria for a three-game series starting Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Las Vegas will remain in Victoria for games on Friday and Saturday before returning home on Tuesday, March 4th at 9:05 pm to host Stockton.
