Wheeling Nailers Defensemen Clark Seymour Celebrates with Wheeling Nailers Teammates

WHEELING, WV- In 24 seasons of hockey in Wheeling, fans likely haven't witnessed what they saw on Tuesday morning at WesBanco Arena. The Wheeling Nailers trailed the Cincinnati Cyclones, 5-2 with under five minutes to play, but then rallied, scoring five times in 4:10 for a 7-5 triumph in front of a sellout crowd of 5,511. Defensemen Brett Stern and Clark Seymour both scored twice, with Stern netting the first of his professional career, in addition to the game winner with 32.6 seconds left.
The two sides gave a bit of an indication of what was to come in the first period, as they combined for three goals in a span of 3:19. The Cyclones struck first off of a Jack Downing dump in. Nick Huard chased down the loose puck in the corner, eventually connecting with Zach Budish on the left side of the crease. 35 seconds later, Cincinnati went ahead by two, as a Wheeling turnover produced a goal from the top of the right circle by Cody Carlson. The Nailers' lone goal of the opening stanza came at the 9:13 mark, when Sahir Gill teed up a one-timer for Brett Stern, who drove home his first pro goal.
Only two goals were tallied in the second period, but once again, they came in quick order. The Cyclones extended their lead at 11:03, when Joe Wilson converted an odd man rush with a wrister from the right circle. 1:12 later, Wheeling pulled to within one with a power play marker. Jarrett Burton won a face-off to Zack Torquato, whose shot got blocked to Derek Army for the tap-in on the right side of the crease.
Jaynen Rissling put the visitors ahead by a pair at the 1:42 mark of the third, with a shot from the slot that squeezed through Franky Palazzese, and Nick Huard made the score 5-2 with a power play goal at 12:58. The Nailers were down, but far from out. Clark Seymour got the first of his two goals with 4:16 remaining, wristing a shot through on the man advantage from the middle of the blueline. 1:12 later, Seymour struck gold again, drilling in a shot from the left point off of a face-off win by Shane Bakker. With 1:07 to go, Wheeling made thousands of kids erupt in joy, as Zack Torquato's shot from the right circle flew into the top part of the cage. Then, with 32.6 seconds left, Brett Stern put the Nailers ahead for the first time all day, smacking in a shot from high in the offensive zone, while the teams were playing 4-on-4. Jarett Burton added the icing to the cake with an empty netter at 19:54 for the 7-5 final score.
Franky Palazzese secured the comeback win in goal for Wheeling, making 21 saves on 26 shots. Brad Thiessen lost in regulation for the first time in 2015-16 for Cincinnati, allowing six goals on 40 shots.
The Nailers will travel to Reading to face the Royals on Wednesday at 7:00, before returning to WesBanco Arena for three games over the weekend. Friday is a 7:35 contest against Reading, which will also be a Flat Screen Friday, presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday, fans will be able to meet former West Virginia Mountaineers Pat White and Steve Slaton on WVU College Football Night at 7:35 against the Evansville IceMen. Wheeling and Evansville will meet again on Sunday at 4:05, with a post game skate with the team (even numbered players) and McDonald's $5 kids tickets.
