Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Admirals came up short on a two-goal, third-period deficit to lose, 4-3, to the Elmira Jackals Tuesday night at Scope Arena.
Norfolk hit the back of the net first at 3:12, when Jonathan Lessard dumped the puck in to Alexandre Ranger behind Elmira's netminder Sam Marotta's net. Ranger passed it behind him toward the slot, and as it bounced in the air, Josh Currie was there to swat it in for his fifth goal of the season.
Elmira answered with a goal by Jacob MacDonald to deadlock the score, 1-1, going into the first intermission.Â
The Jackals went into a power play at the start of the second period due to a penalty call on Norfolk defenseman Gabriel Verpaelst for unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of the first period. With just 1:01 into the second period, Elmira forward Mike Seidel scored a power play goal on Rimmer using a redirection off a Nathan Oystrick shot from the point.
Norfolk was the first to score at 1:13 in the third period after a face-off in the Jackals' zone. Admirals forward Tommy Mele scored his first goal of the season with a wrist shot from a sharp angle that beat C.J Motte over the shoulder, making it a tie game, 2-2. Motte entered the game in the first period after Marotta left the ice with an injury.
Elmira was quick to answer when defenseman Kevin Clare received a pass in the Admirals zone. Clare walked in on Rimmer all alone at 3:03 and slipped it between his legs for the lead. Only 15 seconds after the Jackals regained the lead, Elmira forward Nick Zappia kept it in at the right point and sent it to Zach Tolkinen down low. Tolkinen quickly fed a backhand pass to Hohmann at the far post for another goal to widen the margin to 4-2.
The Admirals responded with the final goal of the game at 4:15 in the third when Jonathan Lessard smacked a one-timer for his first goal of the season. Lessard's goal lessened the gap to, 4-3 but Norfolk would get no closer. Elmira survived with a 4-3 victory.
Elmira out-shot Norfolk, 44-32. Rimmer saved 40 shots, while Marotta blocked 13 of 14 and Motte kept out 16 of 18 for the Jackals. Elmira scored on one of their six power plays. The Admirals went scoreless on six man advantages.
Norfolk will take on the Jackals again, this Friday in New York at 7:05 p.m.
