Now, That's a Schedule
The Wheeling Nailers opened their 2012-13 regular season schedule with one game, as they fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Cincinnati Cyclones. This weekend, the schedule ramps up drastically, as the Nailers will take the ice three times in as many days, as they will battle divisional rivals Elmira and Reading. The three games this weekend will conclude Wheeling's four-game season opening road trip, with two games taking place at First Arena against the Jackals, and the final game at Sovereign Center against the Royals.
Goalies, Goalies Everywhere
Marc Cheverie won both games in goal for the Jackals last weekend, making 60 saves on 63 shots, as Elmira defeated Reading and Greenville to start the season with a 2-0 mark. Those efforts earned Cheverie ECHL Goaltender of the Week Honors, as he began the week sharing the crease with Nick Niedert. However, in the past three days, the Jackals have received two goaltenders from AHL clubs, as Maxime Clermont was reassigned from the Albany Devils, and Nathan Lawson was reassigned from the Binghamton Senators. Clermont has since been placed on the reserve list, meaning Lawson and Cheverie will be suiting up on Friday.
More Old Friends in New Places
After seeing former Nailer Andrew Hotham in Cincinnati last weekend, Wheeling will see two more players who spent parts of their careers in the Ohio Valley. During the offseason, defensemen Kyle Bushee and Jordon Southorn both signed on with the Elmira Jackals, and will be set to face their former club this weekend. Bushee had a longer tenure with the Nailers, as he appeared in 183 games over the course of three seasons, accumulating 17 goals, 48 assists, 65 points, and 134 penalty minutes. Southorn played in just 22 games for Wheeling last season, registering two goals, three assists, five points, and 15 penalty minutes, after being acquired in a trade with the Trenton Titans.
Rookie Success Translating to Sophomore Season
Dustin Gazley had a remarkable start to his professional career in 2011-12, as he racked up 25 goals, 60 assists, and 85 points, while playing in all 72 regular season games with the Jackals. That performance earned Gazley ECHL Rookie of the Year honors, as well as positions on the ECHL All-Rookie Team and All-ECHL First Team. In case that wasn't enough, the Novi, MI native also led the league in scoring, becoming the third consecutive Elmira player to do so. In two games as a sophomore, Gazley has picked up two goals, two assists, and four points.
Not the First Arena of Choice
Since the Jackals entered the ECHL in 2007, First Arena has been a building that the Nailers haven't exactly enjoyed visiting. Elmira has won 18 of the 25 games played between the two sides in the Empire State, while going 4-0-1 in season series at their facility. Wheeling's best performance came during the 2010-11 season, when they split four games, before the Jackals bounced back with a 5-1 advantage at home last season. Despite that mark, the Nailers were able to gain a point in four of their six trips to First Arena in 2011-12.
