Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors will be without the services of their leading scorer for the next four games. C Lars-Peder Nagel has joined the National Team of his native Norway for their Olympic Qualifying tournament in Kloten, Switzerland.
Nagel, who turns 24 later this month, split from the Condors after their game on Saturday in Anchorage to journey home. Team Norway, ranked 21st in the world by the International Ice Hockey Federation, plays their first game of the four-team round robin tournament on Thursday, February 10th against Denmark (ranked 14). Japan (15) and Switzerland (9) are the other two clubs participating. Only one of the four teams will qualify for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Norway will square off against Switzerland on Saturday, February 12th and Japan on Sunday, February 13th.
In total, there are three qualifying tournaments featuring four teams being held to determine three remaining spots for the Winter Games. One group features Latvia (10), Belarus (13), Slovenia (16) and Poland (20) playing in Riga, Latvia and the third group features Austria (11), Ukraine (12), Kazakhstan (17) and France (18) playing in Klagenfurt, Austria.
Condors G Yutaka Fukufuji was selected to represent Team Japan in the tournament, but will not join his team. Nagel is pulling on his nation's uniform for the sixth time in international play. For more information about the tournament, or a complete schedule and team rosters, log on to the official site of the International Ice Hockey Federation at www.iihf.com.
Bakersfield heads back out on the road with a pair of away games this week, in Fresno on Tuesday night and San Diego on Wednesday. All Condors games, home and away, can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com and the game in San Diego on Wednesday will be available for viewing through B2 Networks on the official Condors website.
Two home games are slated for this weekend, with Fresno coming to town on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. match at the Garden. That night, everyone in attendance is invited to stick around after the game for a free concert with national recording artists Hawk Nelson, presented by KKEY-TV 11, KDUV 100.1 and Island Style.
On Saturday night, the Ice Dogs return to Bakersfield in what may be a showdown for first place in the division starting at 7:00 p.m. The first 2,005 fans through the turnstiles will get a commemorative 2005 US Mint issued California State Quarter, just released one week ago. The quarters come in a limited edition Condors display case, sponsored by KGET-TV 17 and National Staffing, and feature a California Condor.
Season tickets, mini-plans and group outings can still be reserved by contacting the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825). Individual game tickets are now on sale and may be purchased through the Centennial Garden box office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday. Tickets may also be purchased by phone through at 322-2525, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at any Ticketmaster location.
