Toledo Mud Hens News Release
After a rainout on Monday night, the Toledo Mud Hens and the Syracuse Chiefs faced off on Tuesday evening in a doubleheader. Nearly five combined hours of baseball later, both teams were able to gut out victories. The Mud Hens took the first game of the doubleheader 6-5, and then dropped the second game 7-4.
In the first game of the evening, the Mud Hens won in walk-off fashion. Toledo squandered a scoring chance in the first inning, but got on the board in the second courtesy of a Brendan Harris triple that scored Jeff McVaney. In the fourth inning, the Chiefs responded with three runs of their own to take the lead. Syracuse shortstop Emmanuel Burriss hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game 1-1. A batter later, Mario Lisson hit a two out home run off the left field foul pole to give the Chiefs a 3-1 lead. However, Toledo would respond in the bottom half of the inning by getting a run back on an RBI groundout from Miguel Gonzalez.
Down 5-4 in the seventh inning, Xavier Avery singled to get the Hens' rally started. A batter later, Daniel Fields took a walk, and then Mike Hessman followed with a walk of his own to load the bases. With two outs in the inning, Steven Moya stepped up to the plate looking to extend the game for Toledo. Moya, who hit a massive two run homer in the sixth inning, sent a double off the left field wall to score Avery and Fields to give the Mud Hens a 6-5 victory. Moya had four RBIs in the game.
Derek Hankins started on the mound for the Hens in the second game of the night, and allowed a run in his two innings of work. Drew VerHagen came on in the third, and after throwing a clean inning, got knocked around for three runs in the fourth inning. The Mud Hens answered right back though, putting up a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Fields walked to lead off the inning, and then Moya drove in his fifth run of the day with a double. With two outs in the inning, Manny Pina hit a double to center field to tie the game at four.
In the fifth inning, the game unravelled for the Hens. Rafael Dolis gave up three runs to the Chiefs and couldn't get out of the inning. Guido Knudson came on and had a solid outing that lasted an inning and a third, but the Toledo bats couldn't rally late again, and the Chiefs took the second game of the doubleheader 7-4.
The Mud Hens will take on the Syracuse Chiefs in the final game of the three game series on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
