RailRiders Sweep Path to First Place

June 9, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

Buffalo, N.Y. - It's been a long time coming. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) own first place all by themselves. SWB took a pair of games from the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) on Tuesday night, winning 2-1 and 5-1 to guarantee a series victory. Combined with Rochester's 5-4 loss to Indianapolis, SWB has first place all by itself for the first time since the then-SWB Yankees claimed the IL North in 2012.

In the resumption of Monday's suspended affair due to fog, Diego Moreno (2-0), Chris Martin and Jose Ramirez combined on five frames of one-hit scoreless relief. Moreno tossed three innings while Martin and Ramirez each logged a perfect frame with the latter posting his team-best eighth save.

The RailRiders led that game thanks to two-out run-scoring hits recorded Monday night by Kyle Roller and Mason Williams in the first and second inning respectively. Bryan Mitchell started the game and allowed one run over his four innings.

The scheduled affair saw Buffalo draw first blood on Andy Burns' RBI single in the opening inning against starter Jaron Long (5-4). The next inning, Taylor Dugas drove Austin Romine home with a single to left for a 1-1 tie. In the fifth, an intentional walk to Roller brought Romine to the plate with two on and two out against reliever Todd Redmond (1-2). The RailRiders catcher then delivered a two-run double over Caleb Gindl's head in right for a 3-1 lead. An inning later, Williams chased Redmond with his own two-run double for the 5-1 margin that went final.

That final saw brief peril. With two outs and the bases empty, Tyler Webb was one out away from finishing the contest. Matt Hague's contact to second saw Rob Refsnyder's throw take Roller off the bag at first. However, the first baseman appeared to get the tag on Hague, who was ruled safe. Chris Dickerson then singled prompting the RailRiders to summon Nick Rumbelow. The right-hander got a groundout from Burns for his seventh save.

The three-game series concludes at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday. SWB will hand the ball to right-hander Luis Severino (0-0, 2.38) while Buffalo is expected to start southpaw Felix Doubront (0-1, 1.00). SWB returns home to host the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) from June 11-14. The four-game set includes two fireworks nights and a Derek Jeter bobblehead giveaway on Saturday, June 13 courtesy of Allied Services.
