Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Charlotte starter and Boston resident Shawn Haviland pitched six scoreless innings and catcher Kevan Smith hit a three-run home run as the Knights beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-2, for their second straight win in the series on Tuesday night before 6,151 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Haviland (2-4) allowed just three hits while striking out eight and throwing 88 pitches in his return to New England. The Harvard product left the game with a 4-0 lead thanks in large to Smith's three-run blast against Henry Owens (2-5) in the fourth.
Pawtucket (28-31) fell to a season-high three games below .500, while Charlotte improved to 33-25. The PawSox scored each of their runs with two outs in the seventh against reliever Blake Smith, coming on RBI hits from Mike Miller (double) and Quintin Berry (single).
Matt Lindstrom relieved Smith with the tying runners on base in the seventh and induced a groundout from Allen Craig to keep the lead at 4-2. Lindstrom then tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, while lefty Zach Phillips retired the side in order in the ninth to record his second save of the season.
Owens allowed a third-inning run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Saladino, then allowed a one-out single to Trayce Thompson in the fourth. The next batter Neftali Soto reached on a fielding error by third-baseman Garin Cecchini, setting the stage for Smith's three-run homer to right. It was his second in as many nights and the Knights' sixth of the series.
Owens allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks in five innings of work. Relievers Jonathan Aro (three innings, two hits, three strikeouts) and Heath Hembree (one inning, one hit) kept Charlotte off the scoreboard for the final four innings.
Miller (2-for-4, two doubles) and Matt Spring (2-for-4) each had a pair of Pawtucket's six hits. Smith went 3-for-4 to pace the Knights' six-hit attack.
The PawSox will try to avoid being swept as they play the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05pm. Right-hander Justin Masterson (0-1, 10.80) is expected to start for Pawtucket as he continues his MLB rehab assignment against righty Erik Johnson (4-5, 4.18).
