Motor City Mechanics News Release

11/11: MECHANICS PLAY A TIGHT DEFENSIVE MATCH WITH THE MALLARDS

It was the second match-up with the Mallards. Previously the Mallards defeated the Mechanics 4-3 in a shootout on October 22nd. In the first period Greg Bullock (3) tallied a power play goal to take the 1-0 lead over the Mallards. The goal at 16:49 was assisted by Scott Dobben (4) and Matt Smith (2). Both teams tallied eight shots a piece in the first period.

The Mallards came to life in the second period as they would go on to score two straight goals; both on the power play. After three consecutive Mechanics penalties the Mallards would convert as they had a two-man advantage for almost three minutes. At 16:37, Chad Woollard would tally the game tying goal and at 18:35 Anthony Blummer would score the go ahead goal. Through two periods of play the Mallards would tally 21 shots to just 16 Mechanics shots.

No goals were scored in the third period, as both teams tightened up the defense. However, the Mechanics could not muster a goal but did manage to outshoot the Mallards 24 to 23, as they limited the Mallards third period chances to just two.

Rod Branch made the start in goal for the eighth time in the past nine games. Branch finished with 22saves on just 24 Mallards shots.

11/12: MECHANICS DROP FOURTH IN A ROW TO THE RIVER OTTERS

This was the third meeting between these two teams. The Mechanics had won both meetings leading into the evening's game. In the first period it was the River Otters who jumped out into the lead first. Damian Surma, who returns to Michigan, scored at 4:02. Assisting on the goal was Frank Littlejohn and JP Beilsten. The Mechanics managed to outshoot the River Otters 16 to 9 in the first period.

It was more River Otter offense in the second period as the Otters would add three more goals to the scoreboard. Lars Petterson would score twice in the second. One at 7:06 and at 17:34. At 18:49 Frank Littlejohn would tally the third goal of the period. Through two periods of play the Mechanics out shot the River Otters 26 to 22.

The Mechanics made a valiant effort as they would get back in the game scoring two goals within the first 6:27 of the third. Mike Burgoyne (3) would score at 4:15 and Chris Gignac (4) scored at 6:27 on the power play to cut the lead in half. That would not be enough as River Otter goaltender; Kevin Reiter closed the door and stopped 46 shots on the night. The Mechanics mustered 23 shots in the third period (a UHL team high) and 49 total shots on the evenings game, a season high through 12 games.
