Week 4 Game Results:
11/9/05 Elmira 1 @ Roanoke 5
Elmira, NY - Sparked by three power play goals, the Roanoke Valley Vipers defeated the Elmira Jackals 5-1 at their first ever meeting at the Roanoke Civic Center on Wednesday night.
Elmira jumped out to an early lead just 59 seconds into the game. While killing off an early penalty, Jarrett Konkle was pulled down in the process of shooting in from of the Roanoke net, forcing the game referee Jason Rollins to award a penalty shot. Konkle took the shot as though he had been doing this for years, faking goaltender Jamie Hodson out of his pads for his 8th goal of the season. But Roanoke responded by scoring five unanswered goals, including two first period power play goals to take the lead. Mark Scott tied the game on the power play at 6:10 and then Petr Jelinek made it 2-1 at 14:25 of the first period.
In the second period the Jackals continued to give the Vipers power play opportunities. Elmira was strong on the penalty kill, but they conceded an even strength goal that extended Roanoke's lead. Jan Jas scored at 11:44 of the second period to make it 3-1, assisted by Alex Jerofejevs. Elmira was out-shot 26-10 in the first two periods.
In the third period, Jas wasted no time before notching his second goal. He made it 4-1 Vipers just 1:25 into the frame, scoring the team's third power play goal of the night. Roanoke with add one more to their total at 15:36 when the team's leading scorer, David Beauregard capped the night, from Jerofejevs and Scott to finish off the Jackals.
Jamie Hodson got the win, stopping 19-of-20 shots, while Ryan McIntosh got the loss while making 35 saves on 40 shots. Roanoke out-shot the Jackals 40-20 in the game and was 3-for-13 on the power play. Elmira was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
11/11/05 Richmond 7 @ Elmira 4
Elmira, NY - New Elmira Jackals forward David Herring's hat-trick was not enough to lift the Jackals to victory as they lost to the Richmond Riverdogs 7-4 Friday night at the First Arena.
Richmond took the lead tonight on a John DiPace short handed goal at 3:12 of the first period. But Elmira struck back at 5:32 when Eddy Lowe scored an unassisted short handed goal of his own to tie the game at one. Richmond made it 2-1 at 9:45 when DiPace scored his second goal of the period, but again Elmira answered. David Herring scored in his Jackals debut at 18:19, when he redirected a shot from John Jarram for a power play goal, Trevor Burgess also got an assist.
In a game that went back and forth all night long, Richmond came out and retook the lead 40 seconds into the second period. Brian Goudie scored a power play goal to make it 3-2 Riverdogs. Warren Cooper then extended their lead to 4-2 at 14:53 when he found himself all alone in front of the Elmira net. Herring then scored his second goal of the night at 16:22, assisted by Sam Paolini and Chris Chaput to make it 4-3, but Richmond was not done. Dan Vandermeer and Rafal Martynowski scored a minute and a half apart to make it 6-3 Richmond going into the second recess.
In the third Elmira brought in Ryan McIntosh to replace starter Nick Boucher at the start of the period and Elmira cut the lead to two at 11:39. Herring lifted a stunning back hand shot up into the top corner, beating Mike D'Alessandro to complete his hat-trick; Eddy Lowe and Mike Dombkiewicz assisted on the goal. But this night belonged to Richmond, emphasized by a John DiPace hat trick goal at 12:25, less than a minute after Herring's hat trick, to complete the 7-4 score.
Mike D'Alessandro got the win, stopping 41-of-45 in goal for Richmond. Starter Nick Boucher took the loss, making 21 saves on 27 shots over 40 minutes of action, while Ryan McIntosh stopped 9-of-10 in the third period for Elmira.
11/12/05 Richmond 2 @ Elmira 3
Elmira, NY - Spurred by rookie Craig MacDonald's first two goals of the season, the Elmira Jackals came from behind to beat the Richmond Riverdogs 3-2 Saturday night at the First Arena.
MacDonald scored his first goal of the season in the first period, just 2:25 into the game. Captain Trevor Burgess passed the puck from his own end up to MacDonald at the red line. The rookie forward took the pass, then zipped down the left wing, into the offensive zone and snapped a wrist shot up over the blocker of goalie Mike D'Alessandro for a 1-0 Jackals lead.
Richmond quieted the crowd in the early in the second period. Mike Oliveira tied the game with a goal at 3:05 from Bill Vandermeer and Bobby Kulkulka. Then the building really went silent at 11:55 when J.J. Wrobel banged in a power play goal from Oliveira and Dan Vandermeer for a 2-1 Richmond lead.
But the Jackals had had enough of falling short of victory in their own arena. Halfway through the third period, Sam Paolini buried a backhander for a power play goal at 11:16 which tied the game and awoke the joyous Elmira fans. Chris Chaput and Burgess assisted on the goal. 11 seconds later, MacDonald sent the crowd into a frenzy as he scored his second of the night at 11:27, assisted by Tom Clayton and Carl Drakensjo. That was enough as Elmira held on for their third win of the season, their second on home ice.
Goaltender Ryan McIntosh earned his second win of the year while making 25 saves on 27 shots for Elmira. Richmond goalie Mike D'Alessandro took the loss while stopping 43-of-45.
