Vipers weekly report

November 14, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

LAST WEEK'S GAMES:

The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), are taking a much-needed rest this week after a four-games-in-five-days homestand at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Vipers took on the Elmira Jackals, coached by former Roanoke Express head coach Perry Florio, on Wednesday, November 9th and Sunday, November 13th. The division-leading Adirondack Frostbite came to town for a Friday-Saturday matchup against the Vipers on the 11th and 12th. Roanoke took a 2-1-1 record from the homestand, winning 5-1 over the Jackals on Wednesday, losing 4-2 to Adirondack on Friday, losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Frostbite on Saturday, and winning 6-0 to shut out the Jackals on Sunday.

Wednesday, November 9th vs. Elmira

Jan Jas scored twice for the Vipers as they took a 5-1 win over the visiting Elmira Jackals on Wednesday night. Petr Jelinek, Mark Scott, and David Beauregard also scored for the Vipers. Rookie defenseman Alex Jerofejevs had three helpers on the night, and Beauregard added two assists as well. Jamie Hodson made 19 saves on 20 Elmira shots, allowing just one goal on a penalty shot taken by Jarrett Konkle 59 seconds into play. He kept Elmira quiet the rest of the game, as the Vipers killed all five Jackals power plays in the match.

Friday, November 11th vs. Adirondack

Adirondack Frostbite 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2

The Frostbite jumped on the board early to take a 2-0 lead on the Vipers Friday night. Roanoke answered with two second period goals from Josh Tataryn and Steve Crusco, but new Frostbite rookie Mark Hurtubise, playing in his first career professional game, took the puck and gave Adirondack the lead back at 11:24 of the third period. Head coach Jim Wiley pulled Jamie Hodson for an extra attacker, but Lyon Porter gained control of the puck on a turnover to score an empty-netter and put the win in the bag for the Frostbite.

Saturday, November 12th vs. Adirondack

Adirondack Frostbite 3, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2, SO

Josh Tataryn and L.P. Martin scored in regulation for the Vipers, who held a 2-1 lead until the 1:17 mark of the third period, when Mark Hurtubise tied the game to force a shootout. Jamie Hodson made 32 regulation saves for the Vipers, and took a tough shootout loss after a controversial goal call from referee Ken Gallagher. It appeared that a round three shot from Mike Berry had been gloved for a save by Hodson, before it was poked in by Berry, but Gallagher's apparent ruling was that Hodson had never fully gained control of the puck. Martin tied the shootout in the Vipers' half of the round, but a shaken Hodson allowed Hurtubise to score in the next round, and Roanoke never recovered.

Sunday, November 13th vs. Elmira

Roanoke Valley Vipers 6, Elmira Jackals 0

Taking advantage of sloppy play and a slew of Elmira penalties, the Vipers jumped ahead early on Sunday night, taking a 4-0 lead over the Jackals into the first intermission. Steve Crusco and Josh Tataryn each scored in the first period, followed by rookie Alex Jerofejevs, who scored back-to-back power play goals at 10:37 and 15:08. Matt Miller scored his first professional goal at 18:59 of the second period off a pass from rookie David Shillington, who earned his first professional assist and point on the play. Tataryn added a second goal at 12:25 of the third period, to make the final score 6-0. Shawn Conschafter earned his first shutout win of the year, stopping 31 of 31 Jackals shots. Conschafter and the Vipers defense killed 10 Jackals power plays on the night, while the Vipers went 3-for-10 on power play conversions.
