Powerful play in the UHL

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO --- The special team units for United Hockey League (UHL) teams saw plenty of action during the fourth week of the season. Over 40% of the 126 goals scored during the week were on the power play. A total of 51 power play goals were scored in 21 games for an average of nearly 2.5 per contest. The home team had much success on the power play, converting on 20.6% (35 of 170) of the opportunities while the visiting team converted just under 11% (16 of 146) of their chances on the man advantage.

Kalamazoo recorded a league season high five power play goals in their 6-1 victory vs. Danbury on Saturday. Muskegon (3) and Danbury (2) combined for five power play goals in their game on Friday.

Muskegon, Port Huron, and Roanoke are currently tied for the UHL lead with 17 power plays this season.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS - Elmira Jackals David Herring netted a hat trick (3g) in his debut with the team on Friday. It was just the fourth professional game for the rookie right winger. Right wing Scott Horvath also had a successful debut as he collected three points (1g, 2a) to help lead the Missouri River Otters to their first win of the season on Friday. Adirondack forward Mark Hurtubise also had a three-point night (1g, 2a) in his first game with the Frostbite on Friday.

TOUGH COMPANY - The Muskegon Fury currently have four of the top five scorers in the league. The quartet of Todd Robinson, Jeff Nelson, Robin Bouchard, and Ryan Keller have combined for 77 points (29g, 48a) through the first nine games for Muskegon this season.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Adirondack Frostbite - (3-0-0) - Left wing Hugo Belanger had his ten-game point streak snapped on Sunday vs. Richmond. The streak was the longest in the UHL this season...The Frostbite have out-shot their opponents in nine of 11 games this season...Forward Mark Hurtubise made his debut with Adirondack this week and scored in all three games (2g, 3a). He also scored in each of Adirondack's two shootout victories...The Frostbite were just 1 of 21 (4.8%) on the power play this week...19 of the 46 team goals have been scored in the first period this season.

Danbury Trashers - (0-2-0) - Eight of the 11 goals allowed this weekend by the Trashers were power play goals and one other was shorthanded...The five power play goals allowed to Kalamazoo on Saturday were the most in the UHL this season...18 of the 33 goals allowed by goaltender Sylvain Daigle have been power play goals... Defenseman Ryan Jorde was called up to Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL) becoming the second Danbury player to earn a call-up this season...The current three-game losing streak is the longest the team has had since they lost four straight in March of last season.

Elmira Jackals - (1-3-0) - In his debut with the Jackals, right wing David Herring netted a hat trick (3g) on Friday vs. Richmond...Right wing Jarrett Konkle had his seven-game point streak snapped on Friday...The Jackals lead the UHL with 118 minor penalties...Defenseman Chris Mann has visited the penalty box in all six road games this season which is the longest current streak in the UHL...Elmira is tied for last in the league in goals allowed (52).

Flint Generals - (1-1-0) - Goaltender Jason Saal stopped all four shooters in the shootout on Saturday to help defeat Quad City 3-2...After not winning four straight home games, the Generals have earned two consecutive home victories...Flint is 3-0-0 when leading after two periods...The team has been successful in close games as they are 4-0-1 in one-goal games...The Generals have been outscored 16-5 in the first period this season... Defenseman Fabien Laniel is riding a four-game point streak.

Fort Wayne Komets - (1-2-0) - Goaltender Derek Dolson earned his first win of the season as the Komets stopped Rockford's nine-game win streak by a score of 3-1. Dolson stopped 30 of 31 shots...Left wing P.C. Drouin has a current UHL high nine-game point streak as he has scored a point in each game this season (2g, 9a)...Drouin also has a league high six-game assist streak on the road...Right wing Dustin Virag has a three-game point streak (1g, 2a)...The Komets rank fourth in the UHL averaging 35 shots on goal per game.

Kalamazoo Wings - (2-0-0) - Kalamazoo is 4-0-0 at home this season...Seven of eight goals scored by the Wings last week were on the power play...Defenseman Daniel Carriere tied a team record for assists in one game when he dished out four vs. Danbury on Saturday. He is tied for second among UHL defenseman with ten assists... Defenseman Greg Labenski notched his 100th career assist on Friday vs. Port Huron...Goaltenders Joel Martin (1.33) and Jeff Reynaert (1.61) rank first and second in GAA among UHL goaltenders...The Wings have scored first in seven of eight games this season and scored six or more goals in four of eight games.

Missouri River Otters - (2-2-0) - The River Otters won their first two games of the season last week, beating Fort Wayne and Motor City on consecutive nights...Winger Scott Horvath made his debut with the team on Friday and tallied a three-point night (1g, 2a) and finished the game with a plus-four rating...Forward Frank Littlejohn, Damian Surma, and Lars Pettersen have accounted for seven of the last 13 goals scored by the team...Although Missouri ranks last in the UHL on the power play (10.4%), they recorded three power play goals vs. Motor City on Saturday.

Motor City Mechanics - (0-2-0) - Goaltender Rod Branch leads UHL goaltenders with 265 saves...The Mechanics fired 23 shots in the second period on Saturday vs. Missouri. That total is a league best in one period this season... Defenseman Matt Smith has a point in each of his last two games...Motor City has not won in their last four games...The Mechanics are 4-0-1 when leading after two periods.

Muskegon Fury - (3-0-0) - Muskegon is off to their best start in team history (9-0-0). The mark also equals the teams longest regular season winning streak...The Fury are 5-0-0 vs. Central Division opponents...Dating back to last season, Muskegon is 20-2-0 in their last 22 home games...Five of Muskegon's league leading six shorthanded goals have been scored by rookies; David Wrigley (3), Ryan Keller (2)...Right wing Robin Bouchard dished out his 500th career assist on Sunday vs. Port Huron. He is four goals shy of 500 for his career and four points shy of 1,000...Left wing David Wrigley leads the UHL with four game-winning goals.

Port Huron Flags - (1-2-1) - Right wing Brad Mehalko is riding a nine-game point streak which is tied for the current UHL high...The Flags have not won in their last three games and have not won in their last four road games. They are the only UHL team without a road victory this season...Goaltender Scott Hay made 110 saves in three games this week for a .948 SPCT. He also had a 2.18 GAA during the week...Center Aaron Brand is tied for second in the UHL with five power play goals.

Quad City Mallards - (2-0-1) - The Mallards are unbeaten in their last seven games (5-0-2)...Forward Chad Woollard has scored in each of the last five games. During Quad City's seven-game unbeaten streak, he has eight points (2g, 6a)...Goaltender Jason Tapp has not allowed a goal in the third period during his last seven games. During that stretch, he has made 61 saves in the third period...Tom Galvin, Mike Olynyk, and Noah Whyte all scored their first goals as Mallards in Sunday's 6-3 win vs. Fort Wayne. Olynyk's proved to be the game-winner.

Richmond RiverDogs - (1-1-1) - Defenseman Dan Vandermeer tallied at least one assist in each game this week. He leads UHL defenseman in points (13) and assists (11)...The RiverDogs have yet to win a home game this season (0-3-1)...Richmond ranks 13th in the UHL in home power play percentage (11.1%) and home penalty kill (76%).. The RiverDogs have been outscored 14-5 in the third period this season...The team has been out-shot by an average margin of over ten shots per game this season.

Roanoke Valley Vipers - (2-1-1) - Special teams were solid for the Vipers last week as they converted 8 of 41 on the power play (19.5%) and successfully killed off 28 of 29 opponent power plays...Roanoke ranks fourth in the UHL on the power play (20.7%) and tied for fourth on the penalty kill (88.1%)...The Vipers have outscored their opponents 24-14 in the final two periods this season...Left wing Josh Tataryn is currently riding a three-game goal streak...Goaltender Shawn Conschafter stopped all 31 Elmira shots to earn the 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday.

Rockford IceHogs - (2-1-0) - The IceHogs are riding a seven-game home winning streak...Winger Jason Notermann has a goal in each of his last three games and a point in each of his last five...The IceHogs have gone just 3 of 40 on the power play in their last four games...Ronnie Vogel became the first goaltender in team history to record two points in a game when he tallied two assists in Friday's 5-2 win vs. Flint...The IceHogs trailed for the first time after the second period in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Fort Wayne. It was the first loss for Rockford this season... Rockford has scored first in nine of ten games this season.
