Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose saw their losing skid extend to three games last night, as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins in front of 6916 fans at the MTS Centre. Despite Jason Krog, Nolan Baumgartner, Dirk Southern, Mark Derlago and Darryl Bootland all scoring for Manitoba, a late third period Griffins goal remained unanswered and the loss put the Moose on their longest losing streak of the season.

Manitoba benefited from the first powerplay of the game when right winger Aaron Downey was penalized for slashing at 3:09. With the extra-man, the Moose capitalized on their first opportunity when a pass from Michel Ouellet was completed by Jason Krog to put the home team in the first lead of the night.

Their lead would be short-lived, however, as Cory Emmerton broke goaltender Karl Goehring 30 seconds later to knot the game at one.

At 6:44 Aaron Gagnon stormed into the Moose zone and took over the lead, as his shot sailed over Goehring's glove to put the visitors up 2-1.

Nolan Baumgartner earned the equalizer when he tricked the Griffins defense and hit the back of Daniel Larsson's net to tie the game at two.

At 8:26, Ryan Oulahen continued the game of back-and-forth goals by netting the fifth in the first half of the opening period, to put the visiting Griffins on top of the Moose 3-2.

On the Moose's third shot of the game, they netted their third goal on Larrson, when miscommunication in the Griffins zone and a tip by Dirk Southern tied the game at three.

At 15:21 a hooking call towards Jason Jozsa, gave the Moose their second powerplay. Mark Derlago regained the lead for the Moose on the five-on-four, with help from Michel Ouellet and Andrew Martens, to earn his third of the season and finish the first period up 4-3.

Four minutes into the second period, saw scoring action from the Moose. Griffins alum, Darryl Bootland, notched his fifth of the season and gave the Moose some cushion room with a two goal lead, 5-3.

The Moose went on the powerplay for the fourth time at 8:04 when Cory Emmerton was put away for hooking. Although the Moose didn't score during the two minutes, they were able to put extra pressure on Larrson and inch closer in shots, 14-17.

The powerplay tables turned in favour of the Griffins, when Michel Ouellet was reprimanded for tripping. Defenseman Garrett Stafford went top shelf on Goehring, and scored an unassisted goal to put the visitors within a goal of the Moose.

The third period saw even play between both zones and the Moose eventually caught up in the shot department, with both teams sitting at 23.

A punch that landed on Darryl Bootland, put Griffin Aaron Downey in the penalty box near the midway point of the frame. After the two-minutes expired, Jamie Tardif tied the game at five with only seven minutes left in regulation time.

Manitoba native Darren Helm, would be the next to hit the net, tipping the puck past Goehring to put his team back in the lead with a 6-5 score.

The Moose battled in the final minutes of the game, but the Griffins denied any opportunity the home squad plotted and the Moose saw their losing skid extend to three with a 6-5 loss.
