Lowell, Mass. - Chad Larose scored once in regulation and once in the shootout to propel the Lowell Lock Monsters (7-5-0-2) to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack (7-4-1-2) at Tsongas Arena on Saturday evening in front of 4,109 fans.
The two teams skated to a scoreless tie in the first period. Both had their chances on the power play, combining for five opportunities, but neither could take advantage. The Lock Monsters led in shots 7-5. Newcomer Ryan Jorde brought the crowd to their feet just over eight minutes in with a tilt against Martin Grenier, who leads the Wolf Pack in penalty minutes. Jorde was signed to a PTO earlier in the day.
The rough stuff continued into the second, while the game remained scoreless. A 10-man tussle sparked off near the nine-minute marked that featured four fighting majors and 26 minutes in penalties. When the dust settled and teams got back to full strength the scoring began.
A broken play ended up giving Hartford the first goal of the contest at 11:00 when Alexandre Giroux tucked a loose puck past G Vitaly Kolesnik. Lowell tied the game just seven seconds later, with Cody McCormick's first of the season. Hartford made it 2-1 at 13:03 with Chad Wiseman's fourth of the season on a shot from the right circle. Colin Forbes notched his first goal in 10 games when his wrister trickled through the pads of G Bernd Bruckler at 16:26. Andrew Ladd gave the Monsters their first lead of the game with only 7.7 seconds remaining. The rookie winger picked up a loose puck behind the goal line and waltzed out in front unmolested, held it and snapped a backhander past Bruckler for the 3-2 advantage.
Lowell extended the lead with a tally by Chad Larose late in the third period to make it 4-2 Lowell, but the Monsters could not hold the lead. Dwight Helminen and Craig Weller tallied 20 seconds apart in the 16th minute to force the game into the extra session.
The Monsters had a 5-1 advantage in shots during overtime, aided by their seventh power play of the night. But for the third straight game Lowell headed into a shootout. Keith Aucoin and Hartford's Chad Wiseman exchanged shootout tallies, and on the fifth and final shooter for the home squad, Larose ended it with a backhander to the top shelf. Kolesnik turned aside four of five in the shootout for his seventh win.
The Lock Monsters did not register a hat trick in the game, so everyone in attendance received a voucher good for complimentary admission to Wednesday's game against the Albany River Rats. That game is set for a 7:05 p.m. face off at Tsongas Arena.
The Monsters head to Bridgeport for a 4:05 p.m. showdown on Sunday with the Sound Tigers. All Lock Monsters games can be heard live on 980 AM WCAP with the Voice of the Monsters Ryan Johnston and Eric Lindquist providing color. Live video streaming is also available through the official broadband provider of the AHL, B2 Networks. Click on the B2 link on www.lockmonsters.com to watch the game from your own home.
Individual tickets are on sale now at the Tsongas Arena box office, which is open from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
