Albany Devils News Release
Lowell, Mass. - Keith Aucoin scored twice and Vitaly Kolesnik made 41 saves to lead the Lowell Lock Monsters (3-3-0-0) to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms (4-2-0-0) at the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday night.
For just the second time this season the Lock Monsters took the 1-0 lead. Colin Forbes found a streaking Keith Aucoin, who split the defense and roofed a shot from in close for his third of the season at 5:01 of the first period. Rookie G Vitaly Kolesnik helped the lead hold for the rest of the period, with 15 saves in the frame. He stopped R.J. Umberger on a shorthanded breakaway with just over two minutes remaining in the period, and thwarted a 2-on-1 with 45 seconds left.
The Lock Monsters extended the lead in the second, near the midway point of the game. Chad Larose potted his first tally of the 2005-06 campaign, on the power play at 9:57. Forbes and Brad Richardson assisted. Kolesnik continued his strong play in the second, stopping a flurry of shots on a Philly two-man advantage late in the stanza. Aucoin extended the lead with his second of the game with 2:37 remaining, slipping a shot past G Rejean Beauchemin along the ice after taking a nifty aerial feed from Larose. The Monsters led 3-0 after two.
Philly got on the board in the third period, just seconds after a Phantoms power play expired. Pat Kavanagh jammed in a loose puck on a goalmouth scramble at 6:49 to cut the lead to two. The Phantoms kept pounding Kolesnik with shots in the third, but the Avalanche prospect kept kicking them out. He made 16 saves in the final frame to preserve the lead and improve to 3-2-0-0 on the season. David Gove added an empty net, shorthanded tally with less than a minute to seal the deal.
The Lock Monsters play three games in three nights over the weekend, starting with road games in Springfield on Friday and Providence on Saturday. All games home and away can be heard on 980 WCAP with the "Voice of the Lock Monsters" Ryan Johnston.
