Defenseman announces his retirement

October 26, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, IL (October 26, 2005) - Head Coach Steve Pleau of the Peoria Rivermen, proud new primary affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, announced today that Rivermen defenseman Brett Scheffelmaier has retired from professional hockey, effective immediately.

Scheffelmaier, 24, had appeared in just two games for the Rivermen so far this season and had recorded one assist, a plus-one rating, and two penalty minutes. Last season, various injuries limited the 6-5, 220-pound blueliner to just two games with the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL) and three appearances with the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL. The native of Coronation, Alberta, finishes his professional hockey career with 94 games played, one goal, seven assists, and 226 penalty minutes. His AHL totals include 81 games played, four assists, and 203 minutes in penalties. The St. Louis Blues selected Scheffelmaier with their fifth choice, 190th overall, in the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

The Rivermen are a proud new member of the AHL. Founded in 1936, the AHL now serves as the primary development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams and is celebrating its 70th anniversary season in 2005-06.
