Monsters Fall to Toronto in OT, 4-3

Despite multi-point games from left wing Andrew Agozzino and defenseman Stefan Elliott, the Lake Erie Monsters (31-26-8-4) fell by a 4-3 score in overtime to the Toronto Marlies (33-26-9-0) before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 11,431 Friday night. Toronto scored four unanswered goals, including the game-winning tally at 1:06 of overtime, after the Monsters took a 3-0 lead on two goals from Agozzino and one from Michael Schumacher. The Monsters finish the night five points behind eighth place Milwaukee in the Western Conference playoff race with seven games remaining. The Monsters visit Chicago in their next game, Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN 850 WKNR.

Schumacher opened the scoring, giving the Monsters a 1-0 lead, 5:36 into the second period. On a two-on-one rush, Kenny Ryan placed a backhand saucer pass perfectly on the stick of Schumacher, who sent the puck past Toronto goalie Christopher Gibson for his 11th tally of the year. Just over two minutes later at 7:42, Andrew Agozzino scored a power play goal for the Monsters, making the score 2-0 on a one-timer from the left circle. The goal was the 24th for Agozzino, and was set up by Stefan Elliott and Ben Youds.

Agozzino converted for his team-leading third shorthanded goal of the season when he located a loose puck in the Toronto goal crease and tapped it over the line at 10:56 of the second period. The goal was the 25th of the season for Agozzino, and was assisted by Ben Street and Elliott. The third Monsters goal of the evening marked the end of the night for Toronto's starting goalie, Christopher Gibson. Antoine Bibeau entered in relief.

Toronto's Josh Leivo halted the Monsters goal scoring streak in the second period at 17:01 by knocking in the rebound from a Matt Frattin shot, cutting the Monsters lead to 3-1.

T.J. Brennan cut the Monsters lead to 3-2 with a power play goal for Toronto at 4:44 of the third period. Brennan's slap shot from the left point came with just five seconds remaining in a Monsters penalty. Toronto out-shot the Monsters 12-4 in the third period, and scored the goal that ultimately forced overtime when Byron Froese tied the game 3-3 with 1:05 left in regulation.

Matt Frattin scored the overtime winner for Toronto 1:06 into the extra frame, securing a 4-3 win for the Marlies.

Calvin Pickard stopped 26 of 30 shots for the Monsters, and is now 19-14-9. Bibeau stopped 11 of 11 shots in the Toronto net in 29:53 of work. Gibson stopped 18 of 21 shots before being pulled after 30:56 of game action.

The Monsters visit Chicago Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
