Monarchs Outmuscle Pirates in OT

Portland, Me.- The Portland Pirates (37-24-5-2) fell to the Manchester Monarchs (45-16-6-2) in overtime by a score of 4-3 on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. With the win, the Monarchs clinched both the Atlantic Division and the VIP Cup presented by VIP Tires and Service.

The Pirates came out hot, grabbing an early lead with a short-handed goal from Brendan Shinnimin at 6:55 in the first frame, assisted by Justin Hodgman and Patrick McNeill. Just nine seconds later the Monarchs tied it up when Jordan Weal netted one at 7:04 on the power play with help from Brian O'Neill and Michael Mersch. Nic Dowd scored the go-ahead for the Monarchs at 13:41 assisted by Paul Bissonnette and O'Neill.

The Pirates fought back in the second with Shinnimin's second goal of the night coming at 11:20. It was a power play goal assisted by McNeill and Dylan Reese. Portland took the lead for the second time of the night at 13:27 when Philip Samuelsson scored a power play goal, assisted by Joel Hanley and Lucas Lessio.

The Pirates held their ground into the third period, but Manchester evened the score at 10:55 with a shot from Justin Auger, assisted by O'Neill and Weal. The score remained knotted at 3 through the remainder of regulation, and the game went to overtime. A whistle just after the 4:00 mark in the OT frame brought it to three-on-three where Manchester scored just moments later. Dowd scored the game winner at 3:28, assisted by Mersch.

Mike McKenna (26-15-5) recoded the loss for the Pirates, blocking 28 of 32 shots. Jean-Francois Berube manned the Monarchs' net, blocking 29 of 32 shots.

The Pirates travel to Springfield tomorrow for a game against the Falcons at 7:00 p.m. They return home to play the Sharks on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m. For tickets and more information, please call 207-PIRATES.
