Dzingel Lifts B-Sens Past Phantoms
April 3, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators overcame a late rally from the visiting Lehigh Valley Phantoms to pull out a 4-3 win on home ice. The Phantoms managed to tie the game just over nine minutes into the final period, but Ryan Dzingel's backhanded tally gave the hosts the win in the final game of the season versus their newest division rivals.
The B-Sens opened the scoring 12:28 into the first period on a power-play strike from Troy Rutkowski. Just over two minutes later, Derek Grant made it 2-0 when he redirected a shot from Alex Grant past Lehigh Valley's Rob Zepp for his 19th goal of the year. Binghamton's Chris Driedger stopped all 10 shots faced in the opening 20 minutes of play to give the hosts the 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Blair Jones cut the B-Sens' lead in half exactly 13 minutes into the second period off assists from Jason Akeson and Tyler Leier. Zepp stopped all 12 of Binghamton's scoring chances in the middle stanza to hold the score at 2-1 heading into the final period of regulation.
Mark Alt evened the score 2-2 just 11 seconds into the third with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle; however, the B-Sens responded on the power play three minutes later with Shane Prince's team-leading 25th goal of the year. Akeson once again tied it up just past the nine-minute mark of the final period after he buried an in-close feed from Andrew Johnston. With just under two minutes to play, Dzingel grabbed a bouncing puck at the Phantom's blue line and got in behind the defense. The rookie from Ohio State gave the host's the 4-3 lead when he wristed the puck past Zepp for his 16th marker of the year. Driedger stood tall in the closing 30 seconds to secure the win for Binghamton.
Driedger finished with 28 saves to improve to 4-0-0 in four appearances in net for the B-Sens while Zepp allowed four goals on 35 shots to fall to 19-16-4. Prince ended the night with a goal and an assist while Alex Grant and Aaron Johnson finished with a pair of helpers each.
Binghamton heads to Albany tomorrow evening for a 5:00p.m. faceoff versus the Devils. Fans can listen live on US Country 96.9FM or AM680.
