Bruins Shut out IceCaps 3-0
April 3, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Rob Flick, Ben Sexton and Tyler Randell each tallied singles and Jeremy Smith made 37 saves as the Providence Bruins shut out the St. John's IceCaps 3-0 at Mile One Centre on Friday night.
Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves of his own between the pipes for the IceCaps, who are now winless in their last four contests.
Flick opened the scoring with just under three minutes left in the opening period as he fired a bullet of a slap shot from the left wing that hit the post and found the back of the net behind Hellebuyck.
Sexton pushed the lead to two just over a minute later as Hellebuyck kicked out a rebound to the side of the net. Sexton located the puck and fired a shot from a tough angle that beat the goaltender at 18:28.
Randell made it 3-0 late in the second period as he capitalized on an IceCaps turnover and roofed the puck from the slot with 1:12 left in the frame.
The IceCaps' best chances to break Smith's shutout came late in the game. With the Bruins' Flick sent to the dressing room with a five minute major and game misconduct for boarding, the IceCaps pulled the goaltender for a 6-on-4 power play with over three minutes remaining in the game but Smith was up to the task to earn his third shutout of the season.
The IceCaps and Bruins will battle again tomorrow night, Saturday, April 4 at Mile One Centre at 7:30 p.m. NDT.
