PORTLAND, ME - Left wings Jeff Giuliano and Petr Kanko each collected two points in the Manchester Monarchs 3-1 win over the Portland Pirates in front of 4,623 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Tuesday night. The Monarchs victory prevents the Pirates from reaching the 2007 Calder Cup playoffs.

Manchester (48-21-6-1) is leading the Atlantic Division with 103 points. Portland (35-30-3-9) is in sixth place in the Atlantic with 82 points.

Giuliano returned to the lineup last week following an injury that sidelined him since January and he scored his fourth goal of the season at 8:11 of the first period. Kanko picked up the loose puck and fired a shot on Pirates goaltender Gerald Coleman. Making the save, Coleman could not control the rebound that Giuliano picked up and backhanded into the net.

Portland evened the game at 1-1 when right wing Joe Motzko tallied his 28th goal of the season at 15:19 of the opening frame. Left wing Trevor Gillies threw a shot on net that Motzko was able to tip past Monarchs netminder Barry Brust. Defenseman Greg Amadio earned an assist on the Pirates lone goal of the game.

Manchester took the lead at 2:58 of the second period with center Trevor Lewis' second goal of the season. The Monarchs skated on a 5-on-3 power play when defenseman Jeff Likens put the puck on net. Coleman made the initial save but with bodies in the crease, Lewis was able to jam in the loose puck to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead. Defenseman Eric Werner also assisted on the eventual game-winner.

Kanko collected an insurance goal at 12:40 of the middle stanza for his ninth tally of the season. Kanko received a pass from center Matt Ryan in the slot and blasted a slap shot past Coleman to bring the final score to 3-1. Giuliano earned his second point of the game by assisting on Kanko's goal.

Brust made 29 saves on 30 shots for his seventh win of the season. Coleman took the loss with 29 saves.

Manchester went 1-for-8 with the man advantage. Portland was 0-for-3 on the power play.
