Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights scored a trio of third period goals to overcome a one goal deficit and beat the San Antonio Rampage 3-1 at the Civic Auditorium. The win extended the Knights' lead in the West Division to three points over the idle Chicago Wolves.
The Rampage took an early 1-0 lead with a power play goal 2:06 into the game. Chris Ferraro spotted a wide open Donald MacLean who snapped a shot past Knights' goaltender Curtis McElhinney.
The second period would be a frustrating one for the Knights. Early in the period, Carsen Germyn appeared to have scored, but referee Nygel Pelletier called off the goal, saying Germyn had knocked it in with his hand. An attempt by Justin Taylor later in the period looked to have snuck in under the crossbar, but again Pelletier signaled "no goal".
The Knights finally ended the drought at the 7:11 mark of the third period. Tim Hambly kept the puck inside the Rampage zone and sent it towards the net. As the puck bounced in front of the San Antonio goal, Dustin Boyd smacked it past Rampage goaltender David LeNeveu.
Taylor would put the Knights ahead with a strange goal. Taylor threw the puck at the San Antonio goal and caught LeNeveu napping. The puck squeezed between the body and arm of LeNeveu and into the goal with 5:18 to play in the third.
With the Rampage goal empty for an extra attacker late, the Knights would get an insurance goal to seal the victory. Cam Cunning muscled a San Antonio defender off the puck and fired home his eleventh goal of the year with 1:10 remaining in the game.
The Knights are now 47-24-4-1. They have now earned points in five straight games (4-0-1-0). It was the Knights first home win when trailing after two periods.
Three Stars: 1. Dustin Boyd (OMA) - 1 goal; 2. Adam Pardy (OMA); 3. Donald MacLean (SAN) - 1 goal.
The Knights play their last home game of the regular season Friday when the Peoria Rivermen invade the Civic Auditorium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for all Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' games are on sale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium box office Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets also are available through all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (402) 422-1212.
