MANCHESTER N.H. - The Manchester Monarchs were shutout for the first time this season, and fell to the Adirondack Thunder, 5-0, Friday night at SNHU Arena.
The Monarchs (31-17-7-4) now lead the Thunder (30-18-6-4) by only three points in the North Division standings.
Box Score
Adirondack started the scoring early on a power-play goal by Brock Montgomery at 3:11 of the first period. James Henry centered a pass from the left corner and connected with Montgomery in front of the crease, where he made a forehand-to-backhand move, and with a Monarchs defenseman draped on his back, flipped the puck over the blocker of Monarchs goaltender, Jack Flinn, to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
At 13:42 of the second period, Gunnar Hughes scored his 9th goal of the season, extending the Thunder lead to 2-0. After a shot from the right point by Patch Alber was knocked down in front of Flinn, Hughes picked up the loose puck to the left of the crease and sent a backhander past a sprawled Flinn, to make it, 2-0, Thunder.
Peter MacArthur added to the Adirondack lead at 12:43 of the third period when he scored his 17th goal of the season. Tyler Elbrecht attempted to clear the puck from his defensive-zone, but MacArthur intercepted the puck and fired a slapshot that beat Flinn through the five-hole, to make it a 3-0 Thunder lead.
Just 13 seconds later, the Thunder scored another goal when James Henry scored his 16th goal of the season at 12:56 of the third period. Flinn misplayed the puck behind his own net and turned it over in the left corner to Dennis Kravchenko, who passed the puck in front to James Henry who had a wide-open net with Flinn still behind the goal to make the score, 4-0, Adirondack.
Adirondack and added to their lead at 16:46 of the third, when Brian Ward scored his 17th goal of the season to push the Thunder lead to five. MacArthur gained possession along the right sidewall after a face-off and sent a slap-pass across the zone where Ward was waiting to tap the puck into the net past Flinn to end the scoring.
The Monarchs return to the ice Sunday, Mar. 12 (3 p.m.), when they celebrate Max's Star Wars Birthday Party against the Norfolk Admirals. The first 4,000 fans in the building will receive a complimentary mini-stick giveaway! Tickets for the remainder of the season are available, HERE.
