RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA - Former Aces forward Ryan Walters tormented his old team with a shorthanded goal in the third period, breaking a 1-1 tie and sending the Rapid City Rush to a 2-1 win over the Alaska Aces Friday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Despite the loss, Alaska remains three points ahead of fifth-place Utah in the Mountain Division. The Grizzlies lost at Orlando Friday night.

The first two periods were scoreless. No great scoring opportunities for either team, and the shot that were generated were knocked aside by goaltenders Kevin Carr of Alaska and Adam Morrison of Rapid City. Shots were 8-6 Alaska after one, 21-15 Rapid City after two.

The Aces finally broke the scoreless stalemate at 5:29 of the third period. Pavel Laplante labored the puck out of the Alaska zone, through center ice and into the Rush end. He found Ben Lake in the deep slot, then Lake whirled a pass to Tommy Olczyk, who was stationed lower right circle. Olczyk drilled a one-timer past Morrison for his sixth goal of the season.

Just 35 seconds later, the Rush tied the game as Ryan Misiak tipped a Terrance Wallin shot home, Misiak's 15th goal of the season.

The game winner came as the Aces were enjoying a power play. Walters won a battle on the left wall in the defensive zone, got past a pinch, then found himself on a 2 on 1 break with Misiak. Walters got low in the right circle before snapping home his 26th goal of the season, unassisted.

Final shots favored Rapid City 30-26.

Penalty killers reigned...Alaska was 0-3 with the man advantage. The Rush was 0-4.

The Aces and Rush will conclude the two game series with a 5:05pm AST puck drop Saturday in Rapid City.
