GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - Two goals from Matt Leitner weren't enough, as the Manchester Monarchs chased the lead virtually from the start of the game, and fell to the Adirondack Thunder, 6-4, Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Monarchs (31-18-7-4) were swept by the Thunder (31-18-6-4) in their home-and-home series, and now lead their biggest rivals by only one point in the North Division standings.
Box Score
The Thunder got on the board early, when Peter MacArthur scored his 18th goal of the season at 2:16 of the opening period. MacArthur dug the puck out of the left corner, drove to the net and sent a shot that was stopped by Monarchs goaltender, Colin Stevens, but the rebound popped straight up and MacArthur batted the puck out of mid-air to make it a 1-0 Thunder lead.
The Monarchs struck right back when Ashton Rome scored a shorthanded goal at 3:24 of the first period, his 10th goal of the season. Rome stole the puck in the defensive-zone, carried to the right dot and sent a wrister over the glove of Thunder goaltender, Mason McDonald, to tie the game, 1-1.
Adirondack took their lead back when Brock Montgomery netted his 7th goal of the year at 5:56 of the first period. Montgomery sent a seeing-eye wrister from the left point that snuck past the blocker of Stevens to make the score, 2-1, Thunder.
The Thunder added to their lead at 14:03 of the first period when Keegan Kanzig scored his 1st goal of the season. After heavy pressure in the Monarchs zone, Kanzig took a cross-ice pass from Denis Kravchenko and sent a one-timer from just inside the top of the left circle past the blocker of Stevens, pushing the Thunder lead to 3-1.
Manchester cut into the Adirondack advantage when Matt Leitner scored his 13th goal of the season at 1:42 of the second stanza. Leitner took a cross-ice pass from Peter Leblanc on the offensive blue line, carried in on goal and lifted a backhander past the blocker of McDonald, to make the score, 3-2, Thunder.
Adirondack grabbed their two-goal lead back when MacArthur scored his second goal of the game at 5:31 while on the power play. MacArthur sent a wrister from just inside the left point that was deflected over the glove of Stevens by a Monarchs stick, to push the Thunder lead to 4-2.
Leitner brought the Monarchs back to within one when he scored his 2nd goal of the night at 11:41 while on the power play. Leitner found the loose puck at the right point, skated in on goal and lifted a wrister past the glove of McDonald, to make the score, 4-3.
The Thunder once again made it a two-goal game when Stepan Falkovsky scored his 21st goal of the season at 18:32 of the middle frame. Falkovsky took a pass from J.C. Campagna in the neutral zone, carried the puck to the left dot and fired a wrister past the glove of Stevens to add to the Thunder lead.
The Monarchs would make it a one-goal game when Chris Leone recorded his 1st goal with the Monarchs and 3rd of the season at 14:09 of the final frame. Leone grabbed the loose puck after a failed clearing attempt by the Thunder, and sent a wrister from the left point that found its way through McDonald to make the score, 5-4.
Adirondack would ice the game at 19:20 of the third period when MacArthur completed his hat-trick with Stevens pulled for an extra attacker. MacArthur won the race to a long clearing attempt with a diving effort, and chipped the puck past the stick of David Kolomatis to seal the game for the Thunder, 6-4.
The Monarchs return to the ice Sunday, Mar. 12 (3 p.m.), when they celebrate Max's Star Wars Birthday Party against the Norfolk Admirals. The first 4,000 fans in the building will receive a complimentary mini-stick giveaway! Tickets for the remainder of the season are available, HERE.
Notes Colin Stevens made his first start in net since returning to the Monarchs Peter Leblanc made his Monarchs debut Matt Leitner's first goal was the 25th of his professional career Leblanc recorded the 185th point of his career Chris Leone scored his first goal with the Monarchs
